CHURCHES SHOW 573,723 CAIN IN RANKS FOR 1927 Age of Mergers Results in 1,470 Fewer Pastors; Catholics Lead. B■! l imes Special NEW YORK, April 12.—With the churches of the United States showing a net gain of 573,723 members in 1927, their situation is decidedly more encouraging than at the close of the preceding year, when their net increase fell a little short of the 490,000 mark, The Christian Herald announced today ! in issuing its annual census of religious groups in the United j States. The larger denominations par- j ticularly have accelerated their rate j of gain. The Roman Catholic group shows the largest single gain for the year—l33,Bß9—but the Methodist group is not far behind with a total gain of 150.910 for its sixteen bodies. The twenty organizations which j make up the Lutheran group rank j next with a gain of 67,879. while the fourteen Baptist bodies show j an aggregate gain of 41,712. Churches which are given to 1 evangelism have encouraging net increases in membership. Small denominations which make evangelism their chief work are growing rapidly. Assemblies of God, with a membership of 72,143, in 1927, added 10,101 members. The Church of the Nazarene seems to be concentrating upon evangelism. It has j 68,612 members and its additions i last year were 4,789. The Church of God, Reformation 1 Movement, which had its start in 1880 and has gathered since nearly 35,000 members had gains the last year of 4.659. The returns for ministers and j churches both show, noteworthy decreases. There is a net loss of 1.387 in the number of ministers, which now stands at 217,204, while the number of churches has decreased to 235,991—0 r 1,470 fewer than last year. This would indicate that the! process of consolidation is assuming larger proportions.
