F.ii United Press NEW YORK, April 4.—The stock market today made a remarkable showing of inherent strength in the early trading. Aside from the rail group, the entire list dipped at the opening but quickly snapped back with Wright Aero equalling its high of 132 after a decline of 4 points to 128 at the opening. Brokerage loans for March showed an expansion of more than $317,000,000 when the Street had expected about half that amount. This enormous increase in an ordinarymarket would have brought prices down sensationally, but the enormous public support coupled with millions from the wealthy kept prices at an even keel. Radio, Westinghouse, General Electric, United States Steel, General Motors, Wright, American Can, American Smelting and a long list ot others opened sharply lower. In the first hour General Motors had nearly made up its loss, Bethlehem Steel showed a gain over the previous close of nearly a point. Radio spurted to 192 up 2, and others proportionately upward The early recovery carried through the morning with prices around noon showing sharp gains in several instances. Airplane stocks continued to feature the market, Wright, the sensational performer, rising to new high ground at 141, ■up 9 points, while Curtis came within a fraction of its record of 92, made Tuesday. Timken roller bearing spurted more than six points as did Montana Power, while such issues as Purity Baking “B,” Brooklyn Edison, A. M. Byers, Cluett Peabody. Electric Auto Lite, Paramount and Century Ribbon Mills soared 3 to 6 points. Pittsburgh & West Virginia led rails with a gain of 14 points to 150, ft new high. Chesapeake & Ohio suprted 3% to 199 Vi while Nickel Plate was up two points at 141.

(By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, April 4.—The result of recent frenzied speculation and the increase in both call and time money rates is found in the Stock Exchange figures on brokers loans which, by an advance of nearly 318,000,000 have reached the high point for all time. It would seem to me that the most important question to be answered is whether this great sum can be continued loaned. .Ts the positive control of available stock market funds was in this country the probable answer would be in the affirmative, but that positive control lies not in America, but to some great extent in Europe. There is no telling at the moment exactly how the current abnormal speculative mind will react to these surprising figures. It might turn blindly and with equal or greater ferocity in a negative way than that witnessesd on the recent upturn.

Packers were slow talking around steady. The bulk range was upward from $8.15. Receipts were estimated at 7,500 and there were 216 holdovers. Vealers were 50 cents to $1 higher continuing Tuesday's advance from the Monday decline. Spring lambs were strong and other material was mostly steady. The Chicago market was fairly active to shippers and traders and strong to 10 cents higher. Choice animals brought $8.45 to $8.60. About 15.000 hogs were received and 10,000 held over. Most Hogs Up 20 Cents Most porkers advanced 20 cents on the upturn, heavy meat animals, 250-350 pounds, bringing $8.15®8.75, up 15 to 20 cents. Material in the 200-250 pound class was 15 cents higher at [email protected], and lightweights, 160-200 pounds, went at $8.60®'8.85, up 10 to 15 cents. Light lights, weighing 130-160 pounds, were up 10 cents on the top at $7.75 ® 8.60. Others were unchanged, pigs bringing $7 @7.75, and packing sows, $6.75 @7.75. Cattle were generally steady with 1,100 animals received. Beef steers were $11.75@14, and cows, $7.50@ 10.50. Low cutter and cutter cows brought $5.50 @6.75, while bulk stock and feeder steers went at $7.50® 9.50. Calves $1 Higher Best vealers sold at sls® 16, up $1 in the steady but slow return after the slump Monday. Heavy calves were up 50 cents on the top at $6.50 @10.50. Receipts were lower at 700. The eight million carry over last year took the edge oft the thirteen million bale crop. Thirteen millions this year and cotton will go up and stay up. We are very partial to cotton. Buy some.

Open figures were: Wheat % cent low to % cent higher; corn *4 to % cent higher, and oats, % cent up. Provisions opened weak. Southwest dispatches continue to speak of high winds and lack of moisture over winter wheat fields. Central belt dispatches are alarmingly pessmistic, and abandonment is certain to be very heavy. These factors offset weakness at Liverpool. Weather over the corn belt was unsettled, and receipts are expected to be small. The market is in a better technical position as a result of Tuesday’s liquidation by eastern interests. Oats were still dull, but readily followed the general early upturn.
