SMITH CHANCES MAY HINGE ON TWO PRIMARIES Wisconsin and California Elections May Sway Convention. - BY RUTH FINNEY WASHINGTON, March 30.--Upon the outcome of the Democratic primary elections in two States may rest, to a large extent, the political fortunes of Governor A1 Smith. The States are Wisconsin and California, and the latter, particularly, is looked upon to furnish an indication of public sentiment and a test of Smith’s strength as a votegetter that may have an important bearing on the Houston convention. These are the only two primary States where Smith faces a contest so far. Time for filing has not yet expired in Oregon, Maryland or West Virginia. But in other presidential primary States the field has been left open to favorite sons. Big Interests In California The Wisconsin election takes place Tuesday and Smith, Walsh and Reed are entered, with Walsh holding the advantage of having been born in Wisconsin. In the California primary, May 1, lines will be sharply drawn between Smith and his old enemy, William Gibbs McAdoo. According to word from that State there has been an unusually heavy Democratic registration among voters and keen interest in the outcome. A large number of Republicans are registering for the Democratic primaries apparently, since Hoover is uncontested on the other ticket. McAdoo is backing Walsh and is 4aid to be passing word around that rotes for Walsh open up a safer course toward a dry, Protestant nominee at the National convention than do votes for Reed. Wets and Drys Split In the last general election in California two years ago, Democratic voters split almost evenly on the wet and dry question. McAdoo’s dry candidate was nominated for the United States Senate, and the group that is supporting A1 Smith was successful in the gubernatorial contest. This year the question will turn upon the number of votes Jim Reed as a wet Protestant can draw from each side. If Smith should-show marked strength in the California primary, this would undoubtedly carry great weight in the national convention in view of California’s votes for Wilson in 1916.
