M'COY CAUGHT ,MORO LEADER i SANDINO NEXT General Leading Marines Has Had Great Career; Big Job Ahead, Thi* is the fourth of a series of arti- < es on NicarauKUa. which will appear from time to time in this newspaper. They clearly show conditions in the land where U ,8. Marines now arc fighting:. By MAX STERN Staff Correspondent, Scripps-Howard Newspapers MANAGUA, March 29.—The story of the capture of a very black Sandino of the Moro lands in the Philippines is being told here to illustrate the type of naan President Coolidge has selected to do the biggest job ahead in Latin America, Brig. Gen. Frank R. McCoy. It was a score of years ago when McCoy was serving with “Black Jack” Pershing under General Wood. The army was out to land one Datto Ali, a Moro chieftain who, among the rest, had refused to bend the knee to Uncle Sam. Ali was ambushed with his tribesmen in the grass country of the valley of the Rio Grande in Mindanao, and like Sandino in the jungles of Nueva Segovia, had defied the army for two years and was stirring no end of i rouble. Under the Durian Tree One day McCoy and his little band of sharpshooters coming over the brow of a hill espied a durian, tree, upon which grew fruit dear to the palate of a Malayan, but rare in Mindanao Island. Fortunately, McCoy remembered the tree and its location. Weeks later McCoy met Datto Piang, part Chinese lord of the Cotabato post. “Piang,” said McCoy, “where is Datto Ali?” “Don't know,” answered Piang. “Well,” replied McCoy, “when I go back General Wood will ask me, What does Piaag say?’ and I will say, ‘Piang says he doesn't know.’ And General Wood will say, ‘Piang lied.’ ” Piang thought a moment and then he remembered how a woman, blind-folded, had been’brought, down the river and that she had said that All and his wives were living in a great balay under a durian tree, in the grass country up the river. McCoy didn't set out for the durian tree by the river route. He went back to Wood's headquarters on the sea. Taking a small group of the hardiest sharpshooters, he sailed around the island to the foot of a mountain range. With great difficulty they climbed these and one day in the distance they saw the durian tree and the great grass hv.t under its shade. At night they slipped down, surrounded the rebel chief and took him prisoner. Career Has Been Brilliant But McCoy isn’t even at his best capturing rebels. A brilliant career as diplomat, soldier, organizer and humanitarian has marked his life from the time he left West Point. He headed the American Red Cross work after the Japanese earthquake. He was chief of staff ot the Harbord mission to Armenia. He was Governor General Wood’s first assistant in the Philippines handling fiscal matters. He was with Wood for four years in Cuba and has been on organizing commissions for the
