Johnny Hennessey and Davis Cup Teammates on Way to Mexico City

U. S. Team to Play First Zone Match April 6, 7 and 8. LOCAL STAR AT PEAK Expect Much From Indianapolis Tennis Player. HU'Timcs Special AUGUSTA, Ga., March 26.—Three members of the United States Davis Cup team today were on their way to Mexico City, Mexico, where they will play their first American zone matches against the Mexican team on April 6, 7 and 8. ' William Tilden, team captain; John Hennessey of Indianapolis and Arnold Jones of Providence, R. 1., left this city at midnight. Wilbur F. Coen, Jr., of Kansas City, 16-year-old sensation chosen an alternate, and W. F. O’Brien, accompanied the team. Wilmer Allison of Ft. Worth, Tex., the intercollegiate champion from the University of Texas, the other team member, will join the team en route. Allison left Sunday for a short visit at home. Joseph Wear N os Philadelphia, chairman of the Davis Cup committee, announced after the tryouts he was impressed with the results and expected to recommend they be made an annual event la Sunday’s warm-up matches Hennessey again displayed the brilliant form which won him a place, on the team. He downed Frank Shields of New York, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, and disposed of Tamio Abe, Japanese star, 6-1, 6-1, 6-4. The Indianapolis player’s form has been impressive and much is expected of him in the zone matches.

Here’s Johnny Hennessey, Indianapolis’ representative in the world of “big league” tennis. The Hoosier star earned himself a position on the United States Davis cup team and today was en route to Mexico City for the American team’s first matches, April 6, 7 and 8. Hennessey has been one of the near-great stars for several years and appears to have “arrived” at last. Tilden expects much from the local lad in the Mexican matches.

Japanese athletes have developed into skilled baseball and tennis players after importing American systems of playing and now they are taking up boxing with the idea of entei’ing a team in the Olympic games. He is the Pacific coast amateur welterweight champion, having won five decisions in five fights in the championship tournament.
