PORK PRICES ARE LOWEST FOR DECADE Meat Cost Is Encouraging Sign, as Father ‘Brings’ Home the Bacon.’ Bringing home the bacon is the easiest thing father does these days. Retail pork prices have been lower in Indianapolis during the last two weeks than any other time in a decade and the low prices continued today and probably will for some time. Such a statement would be made today by any butcher who asked regarding the price of pork. Whole hams may be had for far under a dollar and pork chops for the family cost but a quarter. Pork loins during this period have been as low as 13 cents a pound at some chain stores. One butcher went so far as to say that retail pork is the lowest it has ever been since he entered the trade in 1907. To most other authorities, however, this was considered a bit extreme. Farm bureau officials estimated present prices as the lowest in ten years. All of which leads the delighted city householder and the rather depressed pig raiser to inquire, “why?” Answers to this question are rife and opinions vary. In a symposium conducted by The Times, the general conclusion could be reached that an increase in production and a large falling off in exports are

“Although the market usually slumps at this time of year, live hog prices are the lowest at the stockyards that they have been since 1924,” Keehn declared. “Not only
have exports dropped, but the local markets are slowed by the Lenten season. We expect to see increased demand at the close of Lent and particularly for cured pork during the summer months.” Lee R. Higlen, driector of the livestock marketing division of the Indiana Farm Bureau, blames part of the poor prices being obtained for hogs on “direct marketing.” In an article in the January number of The Hoosier Farmer, he condemns the practice of farmers selling to buyers for the packing houses who operate in the country. He points out it is better to contine the practice of shipping to the stockyards, where packers make purchases under a system of competitive bidding. James R. Moore, farm bureau editor and for many years publisher of The Chester Wnite Journal, seconded this idea of the depressive effects of direct marketing and also cited the falling off of exports. He called particular attention to the increase in pork production in Germany, France and Denmark as very vital factors in the present low-price level.

BURGLARS ROB CLOTHING SHOP Several Hundred Dollars’ Worth of Loot Taken. Burglars hauled away several hundred dollars’ worth of suits, coats and dresses and attemnted to blow the safe of the Liberty Store, 30 N. Pennsylvania St., during the night. Joseph Goldsmith, manager ordered an inventory to determine the exact loss. He said he believed it would be below $2,000. Goldsmith discovered the robbery when his foot encountered the combination handle of the safe on the office floor as he entered at 7:30 a. m. Inspection revealed that someone had disturbed the arrangement of the suit, coat and dress stocks. Police did not believe the burglars got into the safe, which contained
several hundred dollars. The door was so jammed that experts were called to open it. The burglars climbed to a rear second floor window, cut a screen, and jimmied the lock. They removed their loot to an automobile the same way, police believe. You’ll hit the bull’s eye when you advertise your gun for sale in Times want ads.
