Charley Paddock, as indicated in the picture above, does not have to stay in high gear to win all his races. He is shown pulling up easily in winning the 300-yard dash in a recent meet between the Los Angeles A. C. and Stanford. That he is reaching top form was proven when he did 300 yards in 31 seconds in an attempt against the record of 30 2-5 seconds.
Crowley and Duffy Draw in Fine Windup to Armory Fistic Show Lightweights in Interesting Scramble: Semi-Windup Is ‘Fizzle’; De Haven, Hurt in Good Battle.
Tommy Crowley, Pittsburgh lightweight, battled through ten rounds in the Legion wind-up at the Armory Tuesday night to earn an even break with Jack Duffy of Toledo in a great battle. It was as fine a scrap as has been presented this season, and while neither fighter displayed enough punch to even knock down the other, it developed into a fine scrap between two willing mixers. If any shade were to be given it should go to Crowley. The usual capacity crowd received a lot of enjoyment out of the tangle. Neither was willing to give ground and the entire ten rounds was filled with action. The semi-wind-up scrap between Glen Nity of Vincennes and Bob Lewsader of Evansville was a “fizzle.” Neither showed enough ability to rate a semi-wind-up position and although the lads apparently were trying hard, neither had enough sock to break an egg. Lewsader won on points what scrap there was. Bud De Haven, Paris, 111., middleweight, earned a shade decision over Cecil Hurt of Indianapolis in a good six-round scrap. Both put a lot into it and made it interesting. De Haven’s shade was his aggressiveness in forcing the fight. A1 De Rose, Indianapolis, was a bit too smart for Billy Meyers, Cin-

cinnati, and easily outpointed the Buckeye scrapper. De Rose piled up a nice lead with a third-round knockdown and kept coming in to slug with Meyers. Harry v Kreindler, Cincinnati, outpointed Alfred Zeigler of Columbus, Ind., in a “passable” four-rounder. Zeigler was unexperienced and had no right in the ring. He was game and took a lot of punching. The last punch of the fight, a right-handed swing, put Zeigler away and he was out at the bell in the last canto.
