PARTY CLASHES I WEST FAVOR HOOVER, SMITH Walsh, Lowden Also Find Support; Rebel Factions Active. TV/ l nilcrt Press DENVER. March 20.—Friends oL presidential aspirants of both parties have swung into active pre-conven-tion campaigns throughout the West, and a dozen brisk intra-party engagements were forecast by observers today. In California interest centered on Senator Thomas J. Walsh's dry candidacy for the Democratic nomination. The Montana Senator's campaign directors predicted a State-wide victory for Walsh over Governor A1 Smith of New York and Senator James A. Reed, Missouri, in the primaries May 1. McAdoo Backs Walsh Support of William Gibbs, McAdoo was expected to give impetus to Walsh's campaign. ‘ Republicans favored Herbert Hoover, Secretary of Commerce. National headquarters of the Lelancl Stanford Alumni Association, indorsed Hoover, a Stanford graduate. Oregon Democrats clashed over prohibition, with national committeeman Will King indorsing Smith and former Governor Oswald West demanding a dry candidate. On the Republican side, Hoover supporters claimed the State, but some sentiment for Frank O. Lowden was reported developing. State Fight Holds Interest In Arizona bitterness of the State | political campaigns eclipsed nation-! ai politics. The State senatorial elec- 1 tion in Nevada attracted more interest there than the presidential contest. In Missouri, Lowden seemed to have a decided lead over Hoover for the State Republican delegation Four district conventions instructed their eight delegates for Lowden. Smith headquarters in San Francisco reported word from Alaska that the territory’s Democratic delegation would be pledged to Smith. Rebel Movement Started Texas is center of interest. R. B. j Creager, national committeeman, and other “regular” Republican leaders have pledged to Hoover, but a decided rebel movement was in evidence. Friends of Lowden, Senator Frank Willis, and Vice President Charles G. Dawes were reported to be considering a coalition to work for an uninstructed delegation to the Kansas City convention. The presidential campaign of Senator James A. Reed of Missouri, will be conducted from a fund made up ; of $1 contributions. GRANT FELLOWSHIP TO PUSH BUSINESS SURVEY Bankers Association Plans Wide- i Spread Middle West Study. Studies begun last year by the economic policy commission of the American Bankers’ Association, of which Evans Woollen. Indianapolis banker, is chairman, will be amplified by establishment of a traveling fellowship in the graduate j school of business administration j of Heyward University. John H. Puelicher, Milwaukee, | chairman of the board of trustees | of the educational foundation of the j association, announced that the special study will be directed in the Chicago Federal reserve district, which includes Indiana. Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and lowa. Effort will be made to determine the causes of and remedies for bank failures. William McKinley Edens, graduate of the University of Illinois and former lowa bank examiner, has been chosen by Harvard to carry on the survey. WATSON AID IS NAMED Joe Killegrew. in Tenth, Completes District Managers Roster. Appointment of Joe Killegrew of Hobart as Watson-for-President campaign manager ,in the Tenth District today made complete the Watson roster of district managers. M. Bert Thurman, national manager for Senator James E. Watson’s campaign for the State presidential preference vote, added as county manager Ernest Force, Lake County; Laverne Wilson, Newton County, and Cope Hanley, Jasper County.
