POPULAR NEWS OF SCIENCE TO RUN IN TIMES Expert Will Write Daily Articles on Modern ‘Golden Age.’ The golden age of science is the name that eminent authorities have applied to the twentieth century. For scientific marvels such as were the dreams of visionary novelists last century are fast becoming daily realties' in this century. The airplane, the Zeppelin, the submarine, the radio, and even television are almost commonplace today. New scientific marvels are on their way. A person can no longer understand or appreciate the world in which he lives unless he has an understanding and an appreciation of science. Scientists among themselves, however, talk in technical phrases and mathematical equations which arc worse than Greek to the layman. He can only understand the fascinating story of science if it is translated into non-technical language. For the past six years. David Dietz, Scripps-Howard Science Editor, has had conspicious success in interpreting science to laymen. This lias been written to introduce Dietz to readers of The Times, for beginning Monday, March 19, The Times will print a short daily article on science by Dietz. In addition, Dietz will lecture three times this week in city , high schools, the time yet to be set.
Knows Scientists During the past six years, Dietz lias attended a majority of the important scientific meetings in the United States and many important meetings in Europe. He has visited many of the world’s most important scientific centers, including the Mt. Wilson Observatory in California, the Desert Laboratory at Tucson, Ariz., the Geophysical Laboratory, the Terrestial Magnetism Laboratory, the Naval Observatory, the Bureau of Standards and other important institutions in Washington, the Greenwich Observatory and the Royal Institution in London, the Paris Observatory and the Pasteur Institute in Paris ,and so on. He has interviewed Prof. Albert Einstein, author of the theory of relativity; Dr. Niels Bohr, author of the Bohr theory of the atom; Sir Oliver Lodge, Sir Ernest Rutherford, Sir Frank Dyson, the astronomer royal of Great Britain, and many other famous European scientists. He is well acquainted with the leaders of American science, President Merriam of the Carnegie Institution; Dr. Harlow Shapley, director of the Harvard Observatory; Dr. R. A. Millikan, discoverer of the cosmic rays; Dr. George E. Hale the famous astronomer, and many others. Dietz has a reputation as a lecturer as well as a writer on science and has lectured in all parts of the United States to audiences of laymen and students. Member of Many Societies He has lectured at Ohio State University, the University of Arizona, the Montana State Normal College, the Eastern Kentucky State Normal College and many others. He is a member of the faculty of Western Reserve University, being lecturer in general science in Cleveland College, one of the colleges comprising the university. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a member of the American Astronomical Society, American Chemical Society, Society Astronomique dc France, American Association for the Advancement,of Science, British Astronomical Association, British Association for the Advancement of Science, Chaldeau Society of Great Britain, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Ohio Academy of Science and Cleveland Astronomical Society. At the last meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he presented by invitation a paper on the relation of the newspaper to science. Readers will find Dietz’s daily column on science a combination of scientific accuracy and fascinating readability.
WOMAN DRINKS POISON (Suicide Attempt Due to Fear Husband Would Leave. Mrs. Vernnie Gibson, 1902 Southeastern Ave., is in a critical condition at city hospital after drinking poison Saturday* night. She attempted suicide because she believed her husband, Aubrey Gibson, was about to leave. When police arrived, they found •a note addressed to her husband on a table. The note read: “Aubrey, you said you would have to leave to get rid of me. I know you would rather be with your blonde and I would rather be dead than to be away from you. You said that you don’t care for me any longer and I know' you don’t. You said j'ou w'anted to be free and have some pleasure, I hope you have it. I know I haven’t treated, you right and I know you haven’t treated me right, so I am sorry for every word I have ever said to you and everything I have ever done.” PLANALUMNI BANQUET Annual Franklin College Event Is Set for March 23. SCHOOL TAX IS LOW Levy Here Compares Favorably With Other Cities. Indianapolis school tax levies compare favorably with other larger cities of Indiana, according to a chart prepared by Albert F. Walsman, school business director, to be submitted to the State tax board in connection with the proposed $600,000 school building bond issue. Os the seventeen first, second and third-class cities Indianapolis is thirteenth from the top in total school, library and kindergarten levies for taxes. Kindergarten lev- i les are made in only three cities— j Logansport, Anderson and Indian- | apolis—and library levies are in-1 eluded with school levies in only ten I cities. The Indianapolis school bond issue levy, 15.3 cents, is less than six of the seventeen cities. The special levy, which pays all school operation costs except teachers’ salaries, is only 15.8 cents here, tiie lowest of any of the seventeen cities. The tuition fund, for teachers’ salaries, 65 cents, is fifth highest, Walsman reported. W. H. HARRISON, LAWER, FILES FOR PROSECUTOR Seeks Republican Nomination; Two Democrats in Race. William Henry Harrison, attorney, 4221 Broadway, filed today as a Republican candidate for nomination as prosecutor. He is the first Republican to seek the office. Several others expect to file within a few days. Five Republicans filed for precinct committtemen. The prosecutor's race already contained the names of two Democrats Raymond F. Murray, 2422 Bellefontaine St., and Edward C. Brennan, 1430 S. Meridian St. Those seeking to be precinct committemen on the Republican ticket, filed today, are George C. Douglass, 632 S. New Jersey St., Precinct 3, Ward 11; Tom L. Cheyne, 526 W. Dr., Woodruff Place, Precinct 3, Center Township (outside); Edward R. McNulty, 1271 Kent Ave., Precinct 6, Ward 14; Lou Wallace Gittner, 1246 W. Thirty-Fifth St., Precinct 29, Ward 4, and Jack C. Thurston, 2241 Nowland Ave., precinct 15, Ward 9.
ACCUSE RICH HOOSIER OF INCOME TAX FRAUD Federal Grand Jury Investigating Case of Up-State Man. The Federal grand jury today w’as investigating, at the request of Mabel Willebrandt, assistant United States attorney general, the case of a wealthy northern Indiana business man charged with filing a fraudulent income tax report. * Albert Ward, United States district attorney, was requested to take the matter before the Federal grand jury, in a long-distance telephone call from Washington last week. The grand jurors also investigated activities of organizers of Florida Farms, Inc., a corporation organized to sell Florida real estate. Indiana investors and banks are reported to have lost several thousand dollars through the scheme. Postal inspectors are understood to have investigated the case and found the corporation no land now, but formerly held a sale contract on certain Florida swamp land valued at about $2 an acre.
DE PAUW FRAT HONORED Indiana Zeta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Wins State Award. Indiana Zeta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, at De Pauw University, now holds the State scholarship of the fraternity. It was awarded at a Founder’s Day banquet at the Claypool Saturday night. John B. Reynolds, of Chicago, former Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce secretary, spoke. Officers of the State organization elected were Leland G. Ridgeway, president; Ted Davenport, vicepresident; Mark D. Griffin, secre-tary-treasurer, and Frank M. Moorman, reporter. Arrest Two on Gaming Charge Police raided a poolroom at 6 W. Louisiana St., operated by LawTence Schreiner, 930 N. Alabama St., and arrested Schreiner and his brother, Frank Schreiner, on charges of keeping a gaming device and pool selling Saturday night. Dean reported that he confiscated fifteen books of baseball tickets.
DEADLOCK MAY HALT S-4 QUIZ Democrats Assail Coolidge: Plan Senate Probe. WASHINGTON, March 12.—With Senate and House conference committees in deadlock, the likelihood a sweeping investigation of the S-4 sinking and salvage operations has almost disappeared. House conferees, headed by Representative Bertrand H. Snell of New York, Coolidge’s Amherst classmate, refuse to compromise on the House resolution for an inquiry by a presidential commission. Senate conferees are just as unyielding. They are determined the investigation shall be made by a Congressional committee, leaving only the question of safety devices to a board picked by the President. The snag is all the more serious because the original resolution called for a report to the President and Congress by April 15. Even if the two bodies agreed on some kind of an inquiry, hope of a report and remedial legislation at this session is slim. Unless the deadlock is broken soon, by presidential intervention or negotiations, the Senate may order an investigation of its own. Democratic leaders are seriously considering this idea. Democrats who have withheld their fire are preparing to assail the administration for permitting the proposal to be held by two Repub-lican-controlled committees. Demands that President Coolidge use his influence have been made. Death Notices BRENTON, JESSIE MAY—Beloved wife of Frank Brenton and mother of Alva. Arthur. Claude.
