Arrival of Fred Haney Bolsters Betzelites’ Infield
star Third Sacker on Job; | Pitchers Burwell and Sehupp Report. 53 HURLERS IN CAMP Indians Play Orioles at [ Auburndale. I* BY EDDIE ASH f Timos Sports Editor PLANT CITY, Fla., March 12. [With the appearance in training tamp Sunday of Third Baseman fred Haney and Pitchers Bill Burnell and Fred Sehupp, the number of players on the Tribe roster in plant City was boosted to twentypine. These three men had been given |ermission to report a week later (than the main squad, and the gresence of Haney here removes the oubt about his plans for the season. The Times never was in doubt ftbout Haney since the day he wired for transportation, but the other jftfternoon newspaper in Indianapolis used a false report, stating the Veteran would not play this year, fend caused a few Tribe followers to fear the team would be minus fe good hot comer guardian. And so that is that. Haney is on the job and soon will take up playing where he left off last year. Part of the huge squad in camp Was due for a battle with the BalStmore Internationals at Auburndale this afternoon in a game that Was to open the Indians’ exhibition schedule. On Tuesday the Orioles Will do the motoring and play the JHoosiers in Plant City. Avery important part of the Indians spring training this year is the long batting drill the pastimers are getting. That is a big item and was brought about by Manager Betzel’s foresight and Owner Perry’s cooperation. Betzel asked for many pitchers for his squads stay in the South and Perry lent him a free hand in gathering them.
As a result there are now thirteen hurlers in Plant City and everybody is getting plenty of hitting practice. It is the largest staff of pitchers ever taken South by an Indianapolis club. Even Reb Russell, usually a later starter on 1 lifting, is crashing the horsehide right now, whereas last spring at this time jteb was hardly feeling the ball. With seven outfielders bidding for positions, Manager Betzel will let bat power solve the problem and he has asked the newspaper men here to keep him posted on averages during exhibition games. Layne, Jacobson and Russell seen: to be assured of berths with Mueller, Anderson, Walsh and Matthews in the doubtful class. Matthews has an edge because he bats left-handed, but if he is retained for that reason he may be supplanted later if Manager Betzel can arrange a deal for a stronger southpaw hitter. The Tribe pilot has asked Owner Perry to make an effort to land Fred Brickell of the Pirates.
William C. Smith, former owner bf the Indianapolis baseball club, is finding it difficult to resist the baseball lure, it was learned today, in the spring training camp of Bruno Betzel’s Indians. It is said Smith fs sounding out the Cincinnati club fofficials on a proposition to buy from that team the controlling interest in the Columbus club of the American Association. Columbus is a “farm” for the Cincinnati Reds. Smith got out of baseball late last feummer when he sold the Indianapolis franchise to James A. Perry. He has been in Florida watching .Various clubs perform and it seems the old baseball enthusiasm has fctruck him again. jHGPPE FAVORS JAKE Former Balkline Champ Predicts Victory for Young .Shaeffer. fly l nited Press NEW YORK. Williams Arrives for Scrap With Malone Tuesday
Bobby Williams came to town early this morning in company with his manager, Billy Ames, and was to go through a light workout at the Arcade gym this afternoon. Williams, who meets Jock Malone of St. Paul in the feature scrap at the Armory, Tuesday night, appeared to be in great shape. Malone also was due to arrive during the day. All the local boxers on the weekly Legion card worked out Sunday in the local gymnasiums and large crowds were on hand to watch the training activities. The MaloneWilliams fight seems to interest the fistic followers, who are about equally divided in their opinions on the outcome of the battle between the smart veteran and the hardhitting youngster.
