MUSCLE SHOALS PROFIT GOES TO POWER CONCERN Senatorial Probe Shows Any of Plans Will Benefit Private Firm. BY C. J. LILLEY’ WASHINGTON, March 9.—lt’s "Heads I win, and tails you lose” so far as the Alabama Power Company and Muscle Shoals are concerned, judging from Senate debate on this subject. Whatever happens the Alabama Power Company will get the hydroelectric power generated there, acording to what the Senators tell. Senator George Norris, Nebraska, ants the Government to operate (a power facilities and sell the nver. If it does, the Alabama nver Company will be its only stomer, say Senators Heflin and ack, of Alabama. Urges Use for Fertilizer Senators Heflin and Black want ic American Cyanamid Company o lease Muscle Shoals to raanu.acture cheap fertilizer for the farmers. If the Cyanamid Company does get the Shoals, the farmers will not get cheap fertilizer and the Alabama Power Company will get the bulk of the power, says Senator Norris. If the Senate gets into another hopeless deadlock, as seems almost certain, the Alabama epower Company will continue to purchase Muscle Shoals power at 2 mills per kilowatt hour, as it is now doing. The power company, which has usually been on hand to oppose the Norris bill and the Cyanamid bid, has been noticeably in the background during this session. No Sale for Government Senator Black says the power company has put nearly all Alabama cities under long-term franchises to purchase its power. Only by selling power retail can the Government keep Muscle Shoals from the power company, Black says. Muscle Shoals continues, with enator Heflin advocating acceptnce of the Cyanamid bid. "The armers constitute the class that needs the help,’’ Heflin says, “and the best way to help is to give them cheap fertilizer.” More than 65 per cent of the passengers who cross the Atlantic to see Europe are women, many of them elderly. Several per cent of the passengers on cruises are married couples.
