Rookie Shortstop Looks Well Afield Alongside Veteran Bruno; Tribesmen Rounding Into Condition. BY EDDIE ASH Times Sports Editor PLANT CITY, Fla., March 7. —Brilliant fielding around second-base by Warstler and Betzel was the high spot of the Indians’ conditioning process in training camp Tuesday. The rookie shortstop and veteran second sackcr teamed together like clock-work while practicing the double play execution. Heretofore, Warstler has been inclined to make the short throw to Betzel too fast or too slow when starting a double
killing, but Tuesday he was! taken in hand by the Tribe 1 manager and taught more} about the finer points. Asa result, his throwing improved and Coach Corriden, who was bat- j ting to the infield, was amazed by ] the lad's performance in snaring hard-hit balls and getting the sphere to Betzel with perfect tim- I ing. Holke and Chet Russell shared the work at first base and Connolly j and Asher operated at third at dis- j ferent times. Herman Asher, former Minnesota University star, scored a hit with the bosses and they believe he has great possibilities. He has an excellent build for an infielder and is rangy and , “loose." Asher makes a good impression at the plate also. Chet Russell didn't show well at j first base Tuesday. He has a lot j to learn if he makes the grade in i I league ball. The West Virginia j j youth is a hustler, however, and may improve in time. The outfielders took a long session | of fly chasing for the first time i Tuesday and they perspired freely j as they galloped through the sand ;

under a boiling sun. “Big Jake" Jacobson operated in center and stretched his long legs for surprising ground coverage. Walter Mueller showed keen action also and his work indicated he is out to make a strong bid for a regular job. Mueller also took a short workout on the infield and there is reason to believe he will make an effort to install himself in the utility role. The ether outfielders here, Layne and Walsh. Reb Russell and Anderson were with the Indians all or parts of last season and the fans back home know their worth. Layne is certain to play left field. He is a consistent hitter and one of the fastest men in baseball. After Wid Matthews reports there will be seven fly chasers in camp and at least two will be sold or traded at an early date.
