BEST SPELLERS SILL GET TOUR OF WASHINGTON Pinal Date in National Bee Set for May 22; $2,500 in Prizes. The National Spelling Bee sponsored by The Indianapolis Times and the Louisville Coui’ier-Journal will be held in Washington. D. C.. Tuesday. May 22, it was learned today. Contests will be held in the Natural History Bldg, ot the National Museum. A total of $2,500 prize money will be distributed among contestants and all spellers will be the guest of sponsoring newspapers lor a scries of sightseeing trips and theater parties. The Indiana champion will be the guest of The Indianapolis Times. Honors for Finalists Spellers from the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades always receive special honors in the Capital City during their five-day stay. Congressmen of their home district usually escort them through various Government buildings and extend them special courtesies which ordinary visitors seldom receive. Sightseeing trips include a visit to Washington monument, the Lincoln memorial and Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington near Alexandria, Va. Another favorite trip with spellers is one that includes the Franciscan Monastery and the St. Alhans Cathedral. One of the earlier tours shows the spellers the homes of famous statemen and ambassadors and buildings where famous historical events have occurred. •‘Spellers who compete in the finals may expect to leave Washington with an increased knowledge of their national government and its history,” says Miss Flora E.' Drake, assistant superintendent of Indianapolis schools, who accompanied the Indiana champion on the Washington trip in 1927. Tarochial Schools Enter Indianapolis parochial schools have entered the Marion County contest and will name four spellers to compete in the State finals May 4 in Indianapolis. Although the parochial schools use different text books than the public schools, word lists in the State contest will be compiled from the public school standard text book through previous agreement between heads of both organizations. Since words in both books practically are the same, there will be little or no difference noted. Miss Drake reports all arrangements compete for the local contest. The Marion County and Boone : County contests are being arranged under the direction of Lee V. \ Swails and C. O. Caplinger, county j superintendents.
