DEAD MEN AND MISSINGS ONES HALTOIL QUIZ Senate Probers Are Faced With Difficult Problem at Inquiry. By United Press WASHINGTON, March 2.—The Senate’s oil investigation has run into another maze of dead men who can give no facts and has found itself balked in its effort to pry further into the mysterious political ramification of the Continental Trading Company deal of 1921. “The three men to whom Will Hays, former chairman of the Republican National Committee says he gave $160,000 of bonds from the deal are all dead, according to information reaching the committee,” Chairman Nye declared today. “It seems exceedingly strange that those witnesses who have not yet fled to Europe have faulty memories and deal with men who are dead,” said Nye. Hays testified he received the bonds from Harry F. Sinclair, indicted oil lessor of the Teapot Dome naval reserve. He sent t .iem, he said, to Fred W. Upham. former treasurer of the Republican national committee; John T. Pratt of New York and former Secretary of War Weeks—all since deceased. Senator Walsh of Montana said he would summon the books of the Republican national committe Chicago headquarters to see if any record was kept of the ~SOO,OOO of Sinclair bonds that Hays sent to Upham. “It is perfectly obvious that the bonds sent to Upham and those amounting to $25,000 sent to Weeks were sold in the open market,” Walsh said. “There is still a chance that we may get some .trace of them.” But neither Walsh nor Nye know where the committee will turn next to ascertain where the remainder of the $3,080,000 Continental profits went. Unless some new trace develops in some unexpected quarter, the committee soon may desist and report its findings to the Senate.
