CAPONE BACK TO LEAD GANG ‘Scarface Al’ Will Direct Police Fight. By United Press CHICAGO, March 2.—Al Capone, gang chieftain, was understood today to have returned to Chicago to direct in person the gangs’ fight for existence. For ten days it has been persistently rumored that Capone had returned secretly and was in hiding in his stronghold in Cicero. Close associates of the gang leader confirmed the reports today. Gangster sources refused to indicate whether Capone’s assumption of the role of field marshal in the gang struggle against police would lead to immediate activity by the gunmen, who so far have confined their offensives to bombs directed at city officials and political leaders. Jack Guzick, one of Capone’s subchieftains and by repute the business agent of all the Capone interests, was critically ill in Michael Reese Hospital today, with Charles Fischetti, cousin of Capone, guarding his room to prevent possible attacks by rival gangsters.
