HICKMAN CASE MAY BE GIVEN TO JURY TODAY Hunt Testifies He Did Not Fire a Shot During Holdup of Drug Store, i By Initcd Prcat LOS ANGELES, Cal., Feb. 28 The fate of William Edward Hickman and Welby Hunt on trial jointly for the murder of Ivy Toms, Los Angeles druggist, may reach the jury today. Cross-examination of Hunt by the State and closing arguments by both State and defense were to be completed today. Another Trial Planned Jerome Walsh and Richard Cantillon, attorneys for Hickman, announced they would offer no evidence to support Hickman's plea of “not guilty” on which he was being tried. They indicated they planned to reserve all evidence for the second phase of Hickman’s trial, his hearing on a second plea of “not guilty by reason of insanity.” At the conclusion of the present trial Hickman must be tried by the same jury on his insanity plea. The State’s cross-examination of Hunt was expected to center on the youth’s testimony Monday in which
THE NEW KONJOLA MEDICINE PRAISED BY NOTED DOCTOR Prominent World War Physician From Cincinnati Strongly Indorses New Compound. Sts., Indianapolis. The report referred to was issued by Dr. Geo. H. Spriggs, 2315 Inwood Place, Cincinnati, who has gained fame, because of his distinguished service in the World War. Dr. Spriggs, who has an Edinburg degree, stated that this surprising Konjola medicine so completely showed its power in so many cases of suffering that he wants everybody to know about it. He gave a detailed statement of the work of Konjola and also offered his photograph for publication. “By helping nature,” said this prominent doctor, “Konjola is far above older known remedies. I first tried it in a case of kidney trouble—getting up frequently at nights. The man who took it came back the fourth day and said he slept through the previous night. I learned afterwards that he had been treating and doctoring over ten years for his trouble. I learned of a man who hadn’t left his home for over two years. He had been a cripple with rheumatism, swollen joints, stiff aching limbs and agonizing pains. He completed a few weeks treatment of Konjola and said he walked a distance of nearly a mile. From this case, I believed Konjola would do wonders for neuritis, and I recommended it to a lady who said she had tried everything for this suffering. She had tried mineral baths, electric treatments and medicine upon medicine. It took only 5 weeks of the Konjola to completely end her trouble, but she has never had a return of the neuritis pains. “I next treated a woman who had been in bed 3 days out of 5, suffering awful stomach pains, caused from gas, bloating and soreness, which had been getting worse for years past. She said in 5 years she had spent several thousand dollars on her health. She took Konjola and began to eat heartily of many things she, hadn’t dared to eat in years, but her food agreed with her. She continued to take Konjola a few weeks longer and gained nearly 20 pounds. She says she feels ten years younger, and her appearance certainly shows it. I had another lady tell me Konjola did her more good than 4 years of special dieting. She took Konjola for nervousness and rundown system. “When Konjola is taken into the human system, there are a score or more of different herbal extracts and each of them has a certain duty to perform on the kidneys, liver, stomach and bowels. The cleansing and invigorating of these important organs is what seems to bfing amazing relief and new feelings of health I heartily recommend it and consider it a real Godsend to those who suffer ill-health.” The Konjola Man is at the Hook Drug Store, Illinois and Washington Sts., Indianapolis, where lie is daily meeting the public and introducing and explaining the merits of this remedy. Konjola is being sold in large quantities at all Hook Stores and by all the’best druggists in all towns throughout this entire sec|^on.—Advertisement. _

he declared he did not fire a shot during the holdup of the Toms drug store which resulted in Tom’s death. Hunt Blames Hickman Hunt testified he “had no intention” of helping Hickman in the drug store robbery and said he was forced into accompanying Hickman. "Hickman put his hand on his gun and said if I didn't help him he'd take care of me,” Hunt testified. Hunt’s testimony was reported to have affected Hickman considerably and court guards quoted him as saying: “He was my buddy, I bunked with him, washed his wounds, cared for him and now, he turns me down.” '

COL.CHAS.A. LINDBERGH’S OWN LIFE STORYc^LSK
THE STORY SO FAR Lindbergh completed his education at the University ol Wisconsin where he became interested in aviation. Later he entered a flying school and flew with a barnstorming outfit as a wing walker and parachute jumper. He bought a Jenny plane and flew through Texas and the South. Lindy became interester in government aviation and applied for enlistment as a cadet in the Brooks Air School. He took examinations in January. 1021, and entered the school in March. Before entering the .school he we.nt on a barnstorming and pleasure trip through the South with Leon KUnk. Lindy was just one of 101 cadest and was awed by the adventures and trials of the older cadets who were going to Kelly Field. But he quickly took up the disciplined life to learn the liner points of flying. . , Strict training methods threw fear into the hearts of most cadets, but Undbergh passed initial tests because of his previous experience. Only eighteen in the class of 104 “got the wings.’* Training at Brooks Field progressed, and Lindbergh gained addiitonal experience in flying all types of planes from the small pursuits to the large bombers. Cadets played many pranks on each other to relieve the grind of study, and Lindy once placed a pole cat in the flrst sergeants s pillow. CHAPTER XIV IN September, 1924, we were transferred to Kelly. The time we had looked forward to for half a year had arrived. We were through the period of just learning how to fly and were entering anew experience—that of learning how to make use of our flying ability in actual service. We would no longer be floating around the airdrome in machines whose only purpose was to stand up under the hard knocks of inexperienced pilots; but we were going to ’fly planes which had an actual military value in warfare. We were old cadets and felt the importance of our experience. We were no longer treated as rookies but as potential officers. Before leaving Brooks we had conformed with cadet traditions and allowed groups of our new class to gather around us while we gravely spoke of examinations, check pilots, "Benzine Boards” and “washouts.” We thoroughly enjoyed the awe inspired by our seventy-five hours of flying experience. At Kelly our difficulties set In with renewed vigor. The De Havilands did not maneuver like the training Jennies, and we were required to fly as we had never flown before. If a cadet was not able to handle his ship in a maneuver which was at least equal to the standard, he was usually heading toward home within a week. We were allowed a few days to become accustomed to flying the new type of plane, then an instructor would go up with us to see if our progress had been satisfactory. If so, we were sent to the next stage; if not, we went up with a check pilot. From landings we went to the “eight” sttage, where were assigned two landmarks such as a tree and a haystack several hundred feet apart, and required to do figure eights around them. Then came the spot-landing stage, when we throttled our engine at about a thousand feet and were required to land in a large white circle without using our motor. On this stage we were graded on our take-off, climb, approach, land-

ing, roll, distance from mark and method of handling the ship. In fact at Kelly we were* constantly under observation and our only method of relaxation while flying was when the sky was cloudy and we could get above the clouds. On one occasion we were flying with a low ceiling and the visibility was not very good. In fact it was an ideal day to do the things we were not supposed to do. I was hedge-hopping along over the conntry when I saw another D. H. playing around on my right. I flew over, and after chasing each other for a while we proceeded to do chandelles, vertical banks, wing-overs, and everything else we could think of; all within a few feet of the ground as the clouds themselves were only about 300 feet high. At last I decided to go up close to the other plane for a little low formation flying, but as I approached I saw that there were two men in the ship and that I had been breaking every rule ever established about low flying with an instructor watching me from another ship. I left that locality with wide-open motor and for several days expected to be called on the carpet before the commanding officer on a washout offense. That instructor must have been a good sport, however, because I never heard from him and never was able to find out who he was. On another occasion, near the end of my course. I came very near being washed out for something I knew nothing about. I had been practicing landings in an S.E.-5 on one corner of Kelly Field. When my time had expired. I landed on the pursuit stag*', taxied up to the line and turned the ship over to the mechanics. That afternoon I was called from class and ordered to report to the operations officer; whereupon he informed me that my flying days were over and that as I knew why, there was no . use in explaining further. I was then ordered to report back to my studies. It came out of a dear sky. I knew of a number of offenses I had committed, but none of them at that time. I had actually no idea of what the operations officer was talking about. When school was over I returned to the operations hut and requested

an account of the alleged offense. It appeared that the propeller on my S.E.-5 was cracked, and the spread-board broken on the landing gear. The crew chief had reported this, together with a statement that there were cornstalks hanging on the* landing gear, and as there was no corn growing on Kelly Field, that was a sure sign that I had landed away from the airdome without reporting the fact. A washout offense. We drove to the pursuit stage and found conditions exactly as stated, except that the cornstalks turned out to be weeds, and it was decided that the damage had been caused by a stake left standing in the comer of Kelly Field where I had been landing, although I had not felt the ship strike anything. The cadet who flew the plane earlier in the morning was using the same part of the field and said that he felt it strike a bump on one of his take-offs, but did not believe any damage had been done. Who was flying the ship made little difference, however, because as long as he had not landed away from the airdome without authority, the slight damage was of no consequence. I had come very close to the “Benzine Board” for an offense of which I knew nothing, but it was probably only the open-mindedness and sense of fair play of the operations officer that kept me from being washed out as a result.
