FLOOD CONTROL RILL OF SENATE IS COMPLETED House Ignores Wishes of Coolidge in It New Measure. BY THOMAS E. STOKES United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb. 28.—The I Senate Commerce Committee prob- j ably will report a compromise flood j control bill tomorrow. Chairman 1 Jones announced today. The committee plans to complete its first draft this afternoon. Jones said the bill will provide i for immediate construction under j the Jadwin plan from Cairo. 111., j to the sea. It will modify the plan, j however, to tjpe extent of placing its execution under a committee l composed of the chief of Army; engineers, the president, of the Mis- j sississippi River Commission, and one civilian engineer appointed by the President. Chairman Reid and the majority group of House flood control committee are revising the Mississippi flood control bill they drafted recently, but it will not meet President Cooiidge’s demand that some form of local contributions be provided, according to authoritative information today. The bill still will provide for payment of all costs of flood control works from Caps Girardeau. Mo., to the gulf by the Federal Government. Willing lo Compromise Reid and the majority group who j voted for the original bill are willing | to compromise on some other j features but will insist upon this principle, or at least that is the position they now take. The only material change to be made in the bill' is elimination of certain high-water limits which the project was required to maintain, it was said today. Major General Edgar Jadwin. Army engineer chief, said flood control works to maintain these limits would cost a billion i and a half dollars. The bill still will carry the $473,- j ©OO.OOO appropriation which Prcsi- j dent Coolidge considers too high, as ! well as jurisdiction by a commission of seven, acting under the President. ; Provides $.‘260,000,000 Jadwin, in his compromise bill, provided an appropriation of $260.000.000, and placed jurisdiction j under the Secretary of War and himself. His measure, which provides for waiving cr postponing local contri- ! fcutions at the discretion of the Secretary of War. will be used by Representative Kcpp. (Repj, lowa, in drafting a compromise bill which ■ will be submitted to the House along with Reid's revamped measure. Still another measure, carrying out the postponement idea but holding to the principle of local contributions is expected to come from some of the administration group in the House. The legislation probably will not be taken up until after March 15. APPEAL - ZONING BOARD DENIAL FOR STATION Land Owners Protest Refund for Business Building'. An appeal from the ruling of the board of zoning appeals which denied rezoning of the northeast corner of Meridian and TwentySeventh Sts., was filed in Circuit Court late Monday by Edward W. and Libbie A. Warner, owner of the lot. The complaint alleged the rezoning was refused on the grounds there is no public necessity for a filling station at this point; and that this is not sufficient grounds for the denial. Other than the board of appeals, defendants are Fred M. Mciere, Guy C. Montani, Community Realty Company, Charles E. Crawford and Mrs. Ernest H. Pierson, remonstrators before the board. A court order setting aside the board’s ruling is asked. 200 CHILDREN MARCH FROM BURNING SCHOOL Union Township Building Near Franklin Destroyed—34o,ooo Loss. Bn Timrs Special FRANKLIN, Ind.. Feb. 28.—Two hundred children escaped unharmed when fire destroyed the Union township school building six miles west of here Monday. A fire drill gong warned the pupils, who calmly marched to safety. The backfire from a gasoline engine used to operate a fan which distributed heat through the building started the fire which caused a $40,000 loss. Most of the children left the building so hurriedly that they did hot get hats, coats or books. COLISEUM HEADS MEET Slack Says Selection of Site Probably Will Be Delayed. Coliseum board members were expected to “mark time” at the regular beard meeting today. Mayor L. Ert Slack said the board probably would delay selection of a coliseum site until “we decide what we want.” Slack is opposed to building a coliseum now. Editor's Son Escapes Trial l: n Times Special MUNCIE, Ind., Feb. 28.—George Dale, Jr., son of Muncie’s crusading editor, will not be tried in Delaware Circuit Court on charges of violating the liquor law and of being crunk. On motion of Prosecutor Joe Davis, the charges against Dale have been dismissed by Judge Clarence W. Dearth, foe of George Dale, Fr. The prosecutor said evidence against the younger Dale was not f ifficient to convict. Death Notices WHITEMAN. ANNA M.—Widow of the late John H. Whiteman and mother of the late Charles B.
