369 such permits in force. This does not cover regularly constituted officers and those who are armed by special dispensation. “Personal protection” is listed on the record as the reason for most of the permits. One hundred and three have been issued since Jan. 1, compared to less than ninety last year. Salesmen Seek Permits Qualifications consist of being over 21 years old, of good moral character, “a proper person to carry a gun” and of never having been convicted of a felony. Two property owners must sign to this information. The permit costs sl, and remains in force a year. With few exceptions the permit seekers are more than 30 years of •ige. Clerks issuing the permits say a great many are traveling sales-
men, and seek the protection while traveling State roads in automobiles. Sees Crime Increase Prosecutor William H. Remy sees in the increase more chance for an increase in crime. “Were not so many people armed,” he said. “Marion County would not be called on to prosecute so many homicide cases.” Several are pending now. Remy finds no fault In the arming of attendants at filling stations, which business he termed “the most hazardous of modern times,” but he does object to promiscuous issuance of permits to others. “Murders are caused by a flare of temper and the fact that a firearm is handy,” Remy said.
