CONFESSES CAR THEFTS BY USE i OF NOTEBOOK Ohioan Tells Detailed Plan of Obtaining Keys for Many Autos. BY RALPH 11. MAITLAND United Press Staff Correspondent COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 24.—An automobile stealing and selling business, highly systematized and lucrative, was revealed here with the confession of Howard Brashear, 31, that he stole forty automobiles during the last two years. Brashear conducted his chosen work with great care and kept exact records of all his transactions, it was discovered. When arrested, he was found to possess a diary of all his thefts, recording the date and procedure of obtaining the cars, together with the name, address and a certain amount of information concerning his victim. Brashear employed practically every method known to crooks in stealing an automobile, but his favorite and most used way was to learn the motor and serial number of a car, and then send to the factory, asking for an ignition key to fit the car. After obtaining a key and stealing the car, he would buy a wrecked car from an insurance company and transfer the license plates thereon to the stolen car. Thus he was able, if questioned, to show a clear bill of sale for the numbers found on the car in question. In event of the numbers on the wreck being obscured or destroyed, Brashear would send the bill of sale to the manufacturing company and get new serial numbers. “In several instances,’’ said Brashear, “I was able to convince automobile owners that I had a car of the same make, the number of which had become, obscured, and that I would appreciate it if they would allow me to copy their serial numbers to obtain anew key or part for my own machine. NAMESAKE OF COUNTY LAUDED BY PRESIDENT William Henry Harrison Called Dubois “Highly Respected. By United Press EVANSVILLE, Ind., Feb. 24.—“A French gentleman who is well known and highly respected by the Indians,” was the tribute President William Henry Harrison paid Tousaint Dubois, early resident of Vincennes and in whose honor Dubois County was named. Dubois was a romantic adventurer and Harrison’s laudatory description gives only a slight idea of the Frenchman’s value to the new Indiana territory. He was familiar with the red men’s ways when only a few understood them. He knew forest ways and had full confidence of the famous chief, Tecumseh. As Harrison’s special envoy he did

His name was spoken over many council fires, and always with respect, in the year preceding the last great defeat of the famous chief. Suffers to Attend School UNION CITY, Ind., Feb. 24.
