FRIENDS DENY OPERA BREAK WITH TALLEY ’Spite Work’ on Part of Young Soprano’s Enemies, Says Sister. By United Peers NEW YORK. Feb. 23.—Rumors that Marion Talley may not be reengaged by the Metropolitan Opera Company next season were characterized by friends and relatives today as “spite work" on the part of enemies cf the young Kansas City soprano. Metropolitan Opera officials said no statement had been issued at the opera house to the effect that Miss Talley was to l ave the status of “guest artist” for a limited number of appearances next season. The sources of rumors which have been published in local newspapers during the past few days have net yet been determined. Plans Rest in Europe Florence Talley, sister of the prime, donna, characterized them as the work of jealous enemies. "Marion’s three-year contract with the Metropolitan ends with the close of this season,” she said today. “She is waiting to hear about the plans for next year before making any plans whatsoever for a concert tour. They naturally must wait io be fitted in with whatever finally is decided as to the opera. She hasn’t, even thought about concert for next year. She plans to sail for Europe, to rest and study, sometime in May, after the opera season closes.” George Engles, Miss Talley's new manager, has maintained silence during the flood of speculation which the rumors have aroused in musical circles. Broke With Manager The young singer broke with her former manager, F. C. Coppicus for publishing without her permission figures concerning her earnings under his management. Miss Talley made her first appearance this season in the opera “Mignon,” Wednesday afternoon. She previously had sung in “Le Coq D'Or” and “Rigoletto.” A large holiday house applauded her principal aria with vigor. The critics this morning almost unanimously concur in saying that the “Mignon” role is the best in Talley’s repertoire, although some of them find fault with her upper voice.

While the team of Waters and Dancer were playing the Orepheum circuit in San Francisco, Ethel Waters heard Sophia Braslau, the celebrated Jewish contralto, sing “Eli Eli.” She remarked to her hostess," who was a Jewish lady. "I have never heard anything that impressed me as much as the last number Miss Braslau sang.” And she expressed the desire to learn this song in Hebrew. The hostess's son told her that he would have his father, who was a Cantor in the Jewish synagogue, teach it to her. That is how Ethel Waters was taught “Eh Eli." After learning this song, at the request of the people who had taught it to her, she made it part of her program. The result was that most of the Jewish people in San Francisco came to hear the Negro girl sing "Eli Eli.” Since that time it has been one of the outstanding features of her program. All orthodox Jews who have heard her sing “Eli Eli” say that her interpretation is perfect. After returning cast Miss Waters was invited by the Jewish Theatre Guild to sing “Eli Eli” at one of their benefit performances. Cantor Rosenblatt and Sophie Braslau. who heard her, said they had never
