RABBI FRIEND OF AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT Tells South Bend Audience Catholicism No Bar. 11 y l imes Special SOUTH BEND, Ind., Feb, 22. Foes of Governor A1 Smith of New York, who oppose his candidacy for President because he is a Catholic, were answered here by Rabbi William M. Stern of Temple Beth-El, addressing an assemblage of Jews and Catnoncs. 'me rabbi’s subject was, “Should a Catholic Be President of the United States?” The rabbi said in part: “Catholics, Jews and Protestants have all contributed to the upbuilding of this great land. Columbus, a Catholic, discovered America with money obtained from a Jew and with the encouragement of Catholic rulers. Cites War Record “Catholics fought in the Revolutionary War and in every war since then, and have at all times done their share for the perpetuation of American ideals. “Many are afraid that if a Catholic were elected President the separation between church and state which is America’s glory would be broken down. But no Catholic organization, as yet, attempted to put 'blue laws’ on our statute books nor assisted in passing anti-revolution-ary laws in various States nor forced religious exercises in our schools or compulsory reading of the Bible in those institutions. ‘Let him who is without guilt cast the first stone.’ States Real Issue "The fundamental issue revolves itself to this: Are we willing to put American principles into practice? “We have said ‘that no religious test shall be a qualification for office.’ Is this an empty phrase or are we willing to live by it? If we are not then let us admit that religious tolerance is a chimera, impossible of realization. But if we believe that America is anew experiment in government, if we believe that the glory and greatness of this country is due to its freedom from religious bigotry and its respect for all faiths and peoples, then we shall have only one test as to fitness for public service: Not race or creed, not rank or station, but the honesty and integrity of him whom we seek to honor. This is the challenge that we must meet.”
PLAN JEWISH REVUE Kirshbaum Group to Give ‘Big Dumb Bell.’ Specialty numbers by Joe Schenker and Israel Zimelman will sea- ; ture the annual revue of the Jewish Community Center Association to; be given Sunday night at the Kirshbaum Community Center. The revue tliis year is called "Dig Dumb Bell.” Schenker has the leading vocal parts and Zimelman is featured in several clarinet numbers and appears in the school scene. There are twenty-five in the cast. The school scene opens the program and is an original comic skit written for the occasion. A dance will follow the program and the public is invited. Palmer Laycock and his orchestra will play. Mrs. Eli Schloss is chairman of the ticket committee. The general arrangements are in charge of Miss Esther M. Arnold, business manager and director; Julian Bamberger, Mr. and Mrs. Max M. Flosser, Miss Gertrude Rosenthal. Flail Aciler, Ernest Cohn, Mrs. Echlcss. Morris Strauss and Jacob Slutsky. Seek Dayton. Cop Assailant Here Police received a call from Dayton (Ohio) police today to be on the lookout for a Negro who shot a police officer there late Tuesday. The officer is in a serious condition and expected to die.
