DENIES FARM OPPOSITION TO HOOVER RACE Michigan Congressman Says Agriculture Strong for Secretary. BY KENNETH WATSON WASHINGTON, Feb. 21.—Reported opposition of farmers to Secretary Hoover's candidacy for President is greatly exaggerated and will have little effect, in the opinion of Representative John G. Ketcham of Michigan, one of the leaders of the House farm bloc who predicted today his State will be overwhelmingly for Hoover. "Taking President Coolidge’s T do not choose’ statement as final, I consider Hoover the serongest candidate the Republican party can nominate for the presidency,” Ketcham, who has been on the House Agricultural Committee for four terms, said. Denies Press Reports Ketcham said press dispatches, from parts of the Middle West in- j dicate Hoover will encounter strong opposition among farmers, based on I Hoover's alleged unfriendly attitude | Toward agriculture while war-time j food administrator. "My own observation and ex- j pcrience leads me to believe that | this opposition has no foundation i in fact that it will have little effect, j Indeed, the actual facts arc the \ other way. Right now the basic contention of all farm relief advocates Is that farm prices should be on an equality with other commodity prices,” Ketcham said. The Michigan Congressman, alter an exhaustive study, said farm commodity prices averaged higher for the entire period Hoover was food administrator than the general retail price level of nonagricultural commodities. Farmer Is Conservative “The farmer fundamentally is a conservative, and when he recalls the price advantage the facts actually prove he enjoyed during Hoover's connection with food prices he will not be stampeded against him in either primary- or general election,” Ktcheam said. Ketcham declared that the charge Hoover has continued unfriendly to agriculture since he became secretary of commerce is as wide of the mark as the charge of discrimination during the war.
