GARRET POKES FUN AT G. 0, P. ‘UNCOLNISM’ > Prates of Emancipator and Follows Hamilton, Democrats Told. “Abraham Lincoln was not one of the founders of the Republican party. It was a going concern and Lincoln was its candidate. Even then he did not use the name Republican on the ticket.” This view was expressed by Representative Finis Garrett of Tennessee, minority floor leader of the House, at the annual banquet of the Democratic Editorial Association at the Claypool Thursday night. “The Republican party was founded by Alexander Hamilton and today it prates about Lincoln, but follows Hamiltonian principles,” said Garrett. “Can you imagine Lincoln having a Harry Daugherty in his cabinet?”

More than 600 leading Indiana Democrats, men and women, attended the dinner. Traces History of Parties Garrett traced the history of the two great parties in America and urged adherence to Democratic principles, as laid down by Thomas Jefferson. Lest the spectacle of the 1924 convention be repeated at Houston, he warned against “blithering about things that are not fundamentals of Democracy and have no place in our Government.” No direct mention was made of the candidacy of A1 Smith, but Garrett's caution was taken to mean a warning against a split in the party over religious issues. Follow Hamilton Policies ,<r fhere is no connection between the Republicn party of today and the principles of Abraham Lincoln. “Hamilton’s principles consisted in linking the propertied class to the Government by granting special privilege for property. Jefferson’s principles called for equality for all and special privilege for none. “The Republican party today follows Hamilton principles on the theory that if you do something for the wealthy they will be benevolent to the poor.” Danger of ruin by inter-party wars
and a plea was stressed by Garrett, who was introduced by Charles A. G.reathouse, secretary of the National Democratic Committee. E. Parke Beadle of Delphi, president of the editorial association, introduced Dale Crittenberger of the Anderson Bulletin, who was toastmaster. Other speakers included Louis Ludlow, Washington correspondent and prospective candidate for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Seventh district, Indianapolis; Mayor L. Ert Slack, who welcomed the editors; Democratic State Chairman R. Earle Peters, Ft. Wayne; Mrs. James R. Riggs, national committeewoman, and Mrs. A. P. Flynn. State chairwoman. Resolutions indorsing Evans Woollen for President of the United States and condemning the present administration in Indiana, were read by Thomas McCullough of Anderson, and unanimously adopted. Attorney Frederick Van Nuys of Indianapolis, spoke for Woollen’s candidacy, which he said was to be “no perfunctory gesture.” Motorcyclist Killed TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Feb. 17. Harold T.
