Off the * I Backboard *—By Norman E. Isaacs—

jr EEPING close tab on the progress of the Indianapolis amateur independent basketball tourney at Tomlinson Hall this week, and the watching of preparations go forward for the staging of the State amateur meet next week, has led Off The Backboard to consider several revolutionary changes in the amateur hardwood, pastime in this State which we believe would prove beneficial to the sport. The winner of the city meet is the recognized city amateur champ and the victorious club in the final event is the recognized State champion. Each year the Indiana-Kentucky division of the A. A. U. sends its best team to compete in the National A. A. U. meet at Kansas City. The change we are in favor of is to have the A. A. U. permit its teams of the State compete in the annual tournament and to send the State amateur champion to the national event, because, after all, upon going down beneath the surface, one finds that the rules of the Amateur Athletic Union are no stricter than the rules which govern the amateur tourneys in Indiana. Several A. A. U. players are found scattered among State tourney teams. tt u tt Ten years ago Wayne Emmelmann started his amateur meets in this State with eighteen teams. This year the event got under way with an entry list of 712 independent basket aggregations. tt tt tt IN Indiana there are approximately five or six A. A. U. teams. Os these, the South Side Turners of Indianapolis are ranked as the best. State champions, it is our belief, should be decided on tournament play within the State, which doesn't happen to be the A. A. U. system in Indiana. tt n tt Purdue and Indiana clash Saturday night at Bloomington and we are picking the Boilermakers to win by three points. tt n tt Some of the classy basketball games on Saturday night’s net program are listed below with our selections made in capital letters: Central (Evansville) at VINCENNES. Marion at ANDERSON. Rushville at FRANKLIN. Columbus at WASHINGTON. MUNCIE at Brazil. tt tt tt Crawfordsvillc. Ind. DEAR. BACKBOARD: Just a line to let vou know that Crawfordsrille Is going to play In the same regional that Bainbrtdge is, and that is enough said if you look at our record. The season in figures: C. H. S., 28: Covington. 32. C .H. 8.. 49; Pittsboro. 34. C. H. S., 73: Attica, 19. C. H. S., 40; Bedford. 50. C. H. S., SG: Hillsboro. 31. C. H. S., 59; Thorntown, 21. C. H. 8., 55: Boys Prep. 7. C. A CRAWFORDSVILLE FAN. tt tt tt Few things have been said of Frankfort recently and we would think that Everett Case is just as well satisfied, for when State tournament time rolls around we’d bet a dollar to a doughnut that the Casemcn will be in Indianapolis, again a contender for the State crown. Frankfort usually is tough and this year is no exception to the rule. tt tt tt Right here in the Indianapolis sectional Southport is just about due to start a few fireworks. The lads south of this city line up as a plenty aggressive club with weight and strength. tt h it Muncie and Newcastle meet tonight. We wouldn’t want to pat the Bearcats on the back and say it looks like a cinch for it is far from that. The Newcastle club, coached by Orville Hooker, has plenty of fight. m tt Saturday night Washington Hatchets and Columbus get together in what promises to be a real battle. Both are high-class outfits, but we believe Burl Friddle’s Washington club is just a trifle stronger.

Net Classic on Between State Rivals Indiana Battles Undefeated Purdue Five Saturday; Harmeson May Play. By Times Special BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Feb. 17. Indiana University basketball team has finished preparations for the State and Big Ten'basketball classic Saturday night here with Purdue, undefeated this season. The Boilermakers top the Big Ten with five triumphs. The contest Saturday is a return game, Purdue having earned a three-point edge, 28 to 25, at Lafayette over the Hoosiers last month. Although Harmeson of Purdue was -injured in the Illinois game it is understood here that he will be ready for Indiana. His injury, it is said here, is not serious enough to keep him out of the battle. The Washington Bank and Trust Company of Indianapolis is sponsoring a broadcast of the game over radio station WFBM of Indianapolis. A triumph for Purdue would bo conceded by many as a certainty of the Big Ten championship going to the Boilermakers. If Indiana should win. indications are that the Hoosiers still would be in the running.
