HIGHWAYS OF DOWNSTATE ARE LEAST AFFECTED jßapidiy Drying, While Those of Centra! System Are Softest of Season. While Indianapolis and central Indiana had the softest roads of the season, the gravel and stone highways of the State system rapidly were drying in the southern part of the State, according to the weekly traffic bulletin of the State highway department. Every unpaved road in the system is still under load restrictions, according to Highway Director John D. Williams. In many cases detours are impassable. Williams particularly cited the following: Detour east of Danville on Rd. 36 very soft, and closed to traffic if load and vehicle exceeds 3.003 pounds. This three and one-half-mile detour is the onlv unpaved gap on this road between Indianapolis and Danville. County roads via Clayton and Cartersburg betweu State Rds. 4fi and 36. not previously subjected to heavy traffic when detour was firm, are handling heavier traffic at this particular time, it was reported to him. The same State Rd. 36 was under restricted loads or maximum of 3.000 pounds, between Danville and Rochville. and officials advised use of the National Rd. <4O) from Indianapolis to Terre Haute, thence north on Rd. 41; pavement entire distance. Rd. 43 was under load restriction from Bpencer north to the National Rd.. and from Greencastle to the Montgomery County line. This condition will prevail only a few days If colder weather follows local rains. Genera] road conditions were listed in the bulletin as follows: No. I—Good stone surface from Rd. 50 to four miles north of Milan; avoid to Fd 46. No. 3—Detour around grading three jriles north of Munqie. No. 7—One-way traffic bridges at eight jpiles and ten miles north of Madison. No. 9—Run-around via Mt.. Etna. NEA Chicago Bureau. Tony Gardello of Evanston, 111., refused many an offer to travel as a midget in sideshows. He preferred the more lucrative business of bootlegging, but the job proved more than he could handle and he soon found himself held (literally) in the clutches of the law.
