HAYS TO APPEAR AGAIN IN PARTY . DEFICIT QUERY V Former Testimony Linked Continental Trading Cos., Campaign Fund. By RUTH FINNEY WASHINGTON, Feb. 15.—Will H. Hays, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, will make his second appearance before the Senate Oil Probe Committee this month almost exactly four years after his first apperance there. When Hays was on the stand before several dramatic incidents ' took place, but no great importance I was attached to his testimony. However it was this testimony that, in large part, has linked Continental Trading Company bonds with Republican campaign deficits. Hays told the committee that Sinclair had given $75,000 toward the deficit. Asked Sinclair to Aid He was hazy about details of the affair, but said: “I asked Mr. Sinclair and others to contribute. As I recollect he told me he would be responsible for a maximum of $75,000, which he furnished. I think that $75,000 went as part payment on a note at the Empire Trust Cos.” Three days later Leroy W. Baldwin, an officer of the Empire Trust Company of New York, testified that a loan by the trust company to the Republican National Committee amounting to $99,000 was cancelled on Dec. 3,1923, by proceeds from the sale of $75,000 worth of Government bonds. Nye Has Information Within the last few days Chairi man Nye of the Public Lands Com- ' mittee has received a list of the numbers of bonds used by DuPont to pay off the loans of the Empire Trust Company to the Republican Coommittee. i He has also, from the Dominion I Bank of Canada, a list of the num- * bers on the bonds purchased by that bank for the Continental Trading Company. According to information laid before the committee by Basil Manly, who has been checking the two lists, numbers on $25,000 worth of the bonds correspond.

CHAPTER XVII AS we walked across town Vance explained. “That first morning, when we were inspecting the Canary’s rooms. I was convinced that the murder would never be solved by the usual elephantine police methods. “It was a subtle and well-planned crime, despite its obvious appearances. “No routine investigation would suffice. Intimate information was needed. Therefore, when I saw this photograph of the xanthous Alys half hidden under the litter of papers on the escritoire, I reflected: ‘Ah! A girl friend of the departed Margaret’s. She may know just the things that are needed.’ “So. when the sergeant’s broad back was turned, I put the picture in my pocket. “There was no other photograph about the place, and this one bore the usual sentimental inscription ‘Ever thine,’ and signed ‘Alys’. “I concluded, therefore, that Alys had played Anactoria to the Canary's Sappho. Os course I erased the inscription before presenting the picture to the penetrating sibyl at Browne’s. “And here we are at the Belafleld, hopin’ for a bit of enlightenment.” The Belafleld was a small, expensive apartment-hotel in the East Thirties, which, to judge from the guests to be seen in the Americanized Queen Anne lobby, catered to the well-off sporting set. Vance sent his card up to Miss La Fosse, and received the message tnat she would see him in a few minutes. “The few minutes, however, developed into three-quarters of an hour, and it was nearly noon when a resplendent bell-boy came to escort us to the lady’s apartment. Nature had endowed Miss La Fosse with many of its arts, and those that nature had omitted, Miss La Fosse herself had suoplied She was slender and blonde. Her large blue eyes were heavily lashed, but though she looked at one with a wide-eyed stare, she was unable to disguise their sophistication. Her toilet had been made with elaborate care; and as I looked at her. Her ingratiating air of affected elegance had quickly disappeared. Her eyes flashed, and their lids drooped harshly. A sneer distorted the lines of her cupid’s-bow mouth, and she tossed her head angrily. “Say, listen! Who do you think you are? I don’t know nothing, and I got nothing to say. So run along—you and your lawyer.” But Vance made no move to obey.
