CHILDREN WRITE ABOUT THEIR DAD Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as Well as Sister Ruth, Tell Their Own Story of James Andrew Marvin, an Editor of the Good Old School. BY WALTER D. HICKMAN Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, being named after substantial characters of the iiible, have taken upon themselves, as well as their sister, Ruth, to write the life story of their dad, James Andrew Marvin. Marvin was one of those old time editors in a small Middle West town', probably some place in Indiana, who was always on the “high ground.”

The five children have written their irapresssions of the fight or struggle of their father to be an editor in the full meaning of the word. This happens in “High Ground,” the first full grown novel to be written by John Mellett of Indianapolis under the name of Jonathan Brooks. “High Ground” has just been published by the Bobbs-Merrill Company of this city. There are mighty few guys in this World who have ever written a story that rings true about the newspaper business. Only once in my life have I seen a news reporter presented in Ilia true light upon the stage and only once in the movies . A newspaper man represents life and it is funny that writers can not catch the realism of such a life. It is to the everlasting credit of Jonathan Brooks that he has caught the true spirit of a pioneer editor. He has not attempted to weave romance and fiction into the lfe etory of James Andrew Marvin.

Marviw is of the small town and as such he reflects the aims, hopes and failures of Main St. It is this simplicity and this honesty in character drawing that makes “High Ground” what it is. Brooks has not attempted to pad the character of Marvin. The author permits the four sons and the daughter to write their own story of their dad. And in so doing you get clearly and simply the true character of the children as well as of the father and mother. Here is a family circle portrait that is only equaled in “Grandmothers.” Not that “High Ground” ranks in the literary class of “Grandmothers,” but it paves the way toward a better and more honest opinion of what newspaper men stand for and fight for. The beauty in “High Ground” is reflected in the way that life is reflected in the various characters. You will find the strength as well as the weakness in this Main St. Editor. And there is real beauty and truth in both qualities. But it seems to me-that it remains for Ruth when she writes of

John Mellett For years, Jonathan Brooks has been a familiar and well-loved name in many American periodicals. His short stories about football and the newspaper “game” have appeared in Collier’s, Cosmopolitan, Saturday Evening Post, Youth’s Companion, American, Everybody’s and others regularly since his graduation from college. i Now his first novel, “High Ground,” has been published. It is the story of a newspaper editor In the Middle West who fought against tremendous political odds. her father to do the big things in the story. Ruth has been able to record some of the pure philosophy of life that

her father had gathered in his experience of making a small town safe for Itself. There Is no fiction in this novel — it is the simple story of a man bucking the world that he found on Main St. It is the truest picture of an editor that I have ever found in a story. An Introduction Brooks’ Introduction to “High Ground” is such high quality that I give it to you in full: ‘•More truly still. It is a wise son that knows his own father. Likewise, there Is something to be trained from the study of loser! more. I should say. than from the study of winners, especially if by' any chance the loser happens to be a winner. ‘•This is a character study, which is all. according to that man Mencken, a novel need be. He savs. too, that if vour novel presents more than the one central character, so that your reader can see not one. but two or three or four characters. and hear them talk, and read their motives, you have not merely a novel, but a better novel. "However. I am not striving to accommodate a critical dictum. I merely wish you to meet James Andrew Marvin, and so I present him to you in these pages I knew him better. I believe, than anv other one person did. but I feel that my Knowledge of him does not equal the combined knowledge of his five children with the Biblical names. In order that von should feel really acquainted with him. I have prevailed on these five to set down

If perchance you at the same time establish an understanding of any of the live children, you may rate that understanding at whatever you think it worth. Mv only guarantee is that you brobably will like James Andrew Marvin himself, and value his acquaintance. “High Ground” in my opinion is a challenge to the world in writing
