ACREAGE OF STATE FOREST IS INCREASED Record Attendance Seen at Parks This Spring and Summer. Preparations are going forward rapidly to increase the size of the Clark County State Forest near Henryville. Asa result accommodations at the state hotels are being augmented, to take care of record crowds expected to flock to the parks during the coming spring and summer. Addition of seventy-seven acres to this forest was announced today by Richard Lieber, head of the conservation department. The land was purchased for $6 an acre and makes a total of 4,600 acres in the forest area. Under the LaFuze forestry law the conservation department obtains about $50,000 a year for the purpose of investing in timber lands and it is the plan to establish the State forests in 5,000 acre tracts, in such localities best suited for timber growing and experimentation, and likewise, where land can be obtained at low prices. Land held by the department, best suited for reforestation, is unfit for agriculture or other purposes and under all circumstances should be growing timber, Lieber contends. Indications point to the greatest attendance this spring and summer

that the State parks ever experienced, and to meet this demand for accommodations, the expansion program is under way. Chief among plans adopted now is the addition of a third story to Clifty Inn, at Clifty Falls, near Madison. The third story addition will provide a number of sleeping rooms and the dining room capacity will also be increased . Attendance at the park during the fiscal year 1927 exceeded 83,000 and it is expected to reach the 100,000 mark this year.

PAY ACT IS ATTACKED Hit Compensation Clause as Unconstitutional. A section of the State workmen’s compensation act raising the maximum amount workmen can be paid while incapacitated for work from $13.20 to $16.50 a week is attacked as unconstitutional in a suit filed in Circuit Court Thursday by Pike County Coal Corporation. The corporation seeks an injunction prohibiting the State Industrial Commission from paying a claim of Jake Jones, injured in the plaintiff’s mine, or any others under the section complained of. Circuit Judge Harry C. Chamberlin set Feb. 20 as a date of hearing on the temporary injunction. The suit claims the former maximum amount, $13.20 a week, was arrived at by considering the weekly wage and average weekly wage of injured persons. Italy manufactures a third of the artificial silk now produced.

his wife and his 6-year-old daughter, Grace, called at the White House and the doorman asked: “Who shall .1 tell the President is calling.” “Tell Abe tha tßed Top is here,” Col. Allen said. Lincoln heard the words from the interior of the room and rushed to the door, insisting that the visitors spend the day and night with him. During the evening, the President took little Grace upon his knee and pressed a five-dollar gold piece into her hand. The little girl prized his gift and it has been preserved ever since. Grace died in 1900 and her mother kept the coin. In 1907, Mrs. Allen died and the gold piece was passed on to her

Lincoln visited the Allen home many times during his legal business and campaign pilgrimages to Vincennes before the Civil War. The room he occupied was later labelled the “Lincoln room.” On one of the first visits Lincoln complained that he couldn’t sleep in the bed in his room because it was too short. “We’ll fix that,” said Col. Allen. The colonel had a bed made eight feet long and five feet wide with a headboard reaching the ceiling, and, upon Lincoln’s next visit he reported his night’s rest “much better.” Dr. John Wesley Hill, then but a boy, who later became famous as a writer, educator and minister, slept every night for many weeks in that bed.
