DEADLINE FOR TAX RETURNS MONTH AWAY Few Early Birds Already Have Made Statements l on Incomes. t Although the deadline for filing 1927 income tax returns is March 15, many of Uncle Sam’s more careful citizens already have made the annual pilgrimage, Internal Revenue Collector M. Bert Thurman announced today. Not deceived by the few prudent ones, Thurman’s office force is preparing to handle the usual rush a few days before the final date. More than $8,000,000 will be collected from Indiana citizens for the first quarter, ending March 15. Blanks for making returns have been mailed to all who filed returns last year. Those not receiving blanks may obtain them at the Federal building. Exemptions for 1928 are the same as last year, $1,500 for single individuals; $3,500 for married persons, with S4OO for each dependent. The tax rate .after all deductions and personal exemptions are allowed, is 112 per cent for the first $4,000; 3 per cent for the second $4,000; and 5 per cent on the remainder. Surtax rates start at SIO,OOO and are graduated. Last year 97,000 returns were filed by Indiana firms and individuals and 19,400 by Marion County firms and individuals. Rules against revealing incomes shown by returns cause revenue office employes much amusement, George Foote, deputy collector, said. “Wives suing for almiony, and seeking information on earnings of their husbands often are highly indignant when this information is denied them,” he said. “ ‘All you men are alike,’ one woman told me when I explained the law on ttyj matter. You have a regular union—you just protect one another against us poor defenseless women.’ ” “One pretty young thing, who asked to see her sweetheart’s return, admitted he had proposed and she wanted to check his ability to pay bills. “We had one fellow a year or two ago who wanted to deduct his Klan dues, but we haven’t had any of those lately. “Another man wanted to deduct depreciation on a wooden leg, as he said the device had to be renewed each year or two. "One of the wisest remarks I ever heard came when a wealthy man jokingly remarked to a friend up here that he wouldn't have to pay any income tax this year. “ ‘That's a pretty poor way to start saving money,’ the friend replied.”
