MOVIE IS BASED ON VERY FAMOUS POEM ■ Beauty of Oliver Wendell Holmes’ 'Old Ironsides’ Is Said to Be Photographed in Film Version of Poem Based on Frigate 'Constitution.’ BY WALTER D. HICKMAN Some movie producers are making an earnest effort to photograph poetry that the nation loves. A step in this direction has been taken by Paramount in producing ‘‘Old Ironsides,” based upon the poem of the same name by Oliver Wendell Holmes. This poem was written in 1830 and since the announcement
has been made that it will open Saturday at the Apollo, I have received numerous requests for the complete poem: Here it is: Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high. And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon’s roar, That meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck once red with heroes’ blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe. When winds were hurrying o’er the flood, And waves were white below. No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee: The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the seat Oh, better that her shattered hulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the gods of storms, The lightning and the gale! The following data concerning the picture has been sent this department: According to the library flies in

MR. JOHN W. CARVER came so quickly that I was surprised,” said Mr. John W. Carver, well-known Indianapolis citizen, living at 515 North Delaware Street, this city, during a receent conversation with The Konjola Man, who is at Hook’s Drug Store, Illinoiis and Washington Sts., where crowds are calling daily to leam more about this amazing new medical preparation. ‘‘Yes, my rheumatic aches ana pains have vanished,” said Mr. Carver, “and I had no idea that such a short treatment of any medicine would so completely relieve my trouble. “I had been affected mostly across my back and through my hips. When I would go to move a certain way, either when walking or turning sideways in bed, I would get a sharp, terrific pain that seemed to come suddenly like a shock, and it certainly was miserable. Os course, I ached continually, but when these sharp pains would grab me I felt like I just couldn’t stand the suffering another minute. If I attempted to rise from a sitting position, I had to hold to something and be careful not to twist a certain way. At nights I was subject, to these attacks, which broke up my rest so that I could seldom get a night’s sleep. I would wake every morning feeling so terrible that It was misery to even dress myself. 1 couldn’t even fire the furnace—and I tell you this rheumatism is awful. “I began on this Konjola as soon as I learned what It was doing for so many Indianapolis people, ana as I said, it relieved me very quick. I get up in the mornings and dress without a bit of pain now, and 1 sleep sne all night long and cah bend and twist any way I care to. The pains in my back, hips ana limbs are all relieved, and its a blessing now that I have no fear of those awful, attacks of pain and suffering as I-experienced before. I’ve been helped in many othev ways by Konjola, and my whole body has anew feeling of health all over. I can put in a good d&y’s work now, and feel like doing lots of lifting and other things that require strength. “After all this relief from rheumatism, I surely take pleasure in making a public indorsement of Konjola.” The Konjola Man is at the Hook Drug Store, Illinois and Washington Sts., Indianapolis, where he is daily meeting the public and introducing and explaining the merits of this remedy. Konjola is sola by every Hook store in this city and by a!l druggists throughout this section.—Advertisement, „ ..
the research department of the Paramount West Coast studio, exactly 1,538 books were consulted by James Cruze and his technical staff during the preparation and filming of “Old Ironsides.” When asked what was the most difficult problem in connection with the research upon the picture, Cruze declared it was discovering whether the “Constitution” possessed an aft deck at the time of her encounter with the Tripolitans in 1804. “According to the original plans of the vessel, borrowed from the Navy Department Qf the United States, she was constructed without this deck,” said Cruze. However, in the private memoirs of Commodore Isaac Hull, written in 1812, mention is made of this deck in several instances—thus shoving that one was built onto the ship after her launching 1737. Records also show that this deck was tom off in later years and the ship is without it today.” Following much Investigation upon the part of naval experts and historians, it was discovered that the deck was erected some time after 1804 and before 1812, when Hull wrote his memoirs. Those featured in the cast of “Old Ironsides,” which was written directly for the screen by Laurence Stallings, are Esther Ralston, Wallace Beery, George Bancroft. Charles Farrell and Johnnie Walker. The story was suggested and adapted by Harry Carr and Walter Woods. Other theaters today offer: Brown Derby band at Keith's; Jack DeSylvia’s Night Club at the Lyric; “The Wife Savers” at the Ohio; Secret Hour” at the Apollo; “The Last Command” at the Indiana; “The Jazz Singer” at the Circle and burlesque at the Mutual. Why be a Nervous Woman?
—Mudge Studio “For some time I suffered from bearing pains and backache, my nerves were in such a condition that the least thing would completely upset them. I would go all to pieces. I also had a catarrhal condition which seemed to weaken me and take away all my strength and vitality. I had black rings around my eyes and was barely able to drag myself around to do my little housework. I took Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription and it relieved me of all inward trouble, restored my nerves and made me well and strong. I have never suffered with any of the above conditions since.” —Mrs. C. F. Unger, 34 Mi S. Main. St., Elkhart, Ind. (Picture above.) In liquid or tablets—all druggists. M’ADOO ATTACK REASONSBARED Quit Race and Expected Al to Do Likewise. F,y United Prcst WASHINGTON, Feb, 9. —“Al” Smith’s failure to follow William Gibbs McAdoo’s example of withdrawing from the Democratic presidential race is responsible for McAdoo’s renewal of his campaign against the New York Governor’s wet views. That was the explanation given today by M. O. Dunning, collector of customs at Savannah, Ga., and one of McAdoo’s closest friends. “McAdoo,” said Dunning, “very gracefully retired v give Smith opportunity to do likewise. But Smith did not want harmony that bad and he’s still In the race.” Repudiating reports that the South was preparing to accept Smith’s nomination at a “Houston and harmony” convention, Dunning snorted. “Harmony hell! Harmony on that basis would be a defeat for McAdoo’*: friends—not a compromise. Harmony at this price is too costly. Must the South pay tribute to Tam-
