STRAWN SCORES LOW STANDARDS TO ENTER BAR Urges Indiana Attorney to Push Drive for Higher Requirements. Indiana’s low requirements for admission to the bar were assailed bgr Silas H. Strawn of Chicago, American Bar Association president, at Indiana State Bar Association mid-winter meeting at the Claypool, Wednesday night. “Indiana attorneys should continue efforts to amend your State Constitution to improve this situation," Strawn said. “An uneducated lawyer is a menace to society. “An applicant for admission to the bar should have two years of college work, or its equivalent, and three years of law school, or its equivalent. “As it is, about all the applicant needs in Indiana is some evidence of good character and to run twice around the courthouse to get the atmosphere.’’ New Burdens on Profession New burdens have been placed tipon the law profession, Strawn said, by the complexity of modern business, with an attendant necessity for higher standards of intelligence and broader experience. Strawn asked cooperation of Indiana lawyers in urging passage of a resolution now before Congress which would advance the date of Inauguration of the President and Vice President from March following election to Jan. 15 and would provide for newly elected senators and representatives to take their seats in January following election rather than yi December, thirteen months after election, as at present. Emsley Johnson Presides Emsley W. Johnson. Indianapolis Bar Association president, presided. L. N. Hines, Terre Haute, and Lemuel A. Pittenger, Muncie, members of the State board of public instruction were introduced. Roy P. Wisehart, State superintendent of public instruction, and Paul V. McNutt, University law school dean, spoke. “The Decameron” of Boccaccio is a famous group of short stories supposed to be related by a group of people who fled from the Black Plague in Italy.
