SENATE MOVES TO BLOCK ALL THIRD TERMERS Majority Aim to Pass Resolution Against Presidential Aspirations. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb. B.—A majority of the Senate is preparing to pass today a resolution expressing the opinion that third presidential terms arc unwise, unpatriotic and harmful to the perpetuity of free institutions. Close friends of President Coolidge in the Senate, like Senators Bingham and Gillett, have denounced the resolution as a political maneuver to embarrass any movement to draft President Coolidge either this year or in 1932. Senator La F'ollette of Wisconsin, whose father ran independently against Mr. Coolidge in 1924, said he introduced the resolution because Charles D. Hilles of New York and some other powerful Republicans were, according to his information. planning to stampede the Kansas City convention for Mr. Coolidge. The resolution contains one clause which “congratulates” Mr. Coolidge on his stand against renomination. Private polls indicate the resolution will be adopted by a two to one majority. Bingham has moved to refer it to the judiciary committee for further inspection, which might prevent any official action at this session. A majority, however, is reported solidly against this suggestion. The resolution is in almost the exact terms of a resolution passed by the House in 1875, when friends of President Grant wanted him to run for an additional term. While the resolution will have no biding or legal effect, both sides admit it would have a tremendous moral influence on any movement to draft the President. They point out that Mr. Coolidge might And it extremely embarrassing to carry on a campaign before the public in the face of such Senate action. Many Republicans intend to vote for the resolution as they consider that Mr. Coolidge has definitely eliminated himself by his public statements.
