DROP SHOWN IN AUTO SALES Sharp Decrease From January a Year Ago. The number of new automobiles sold in Indianapolis in January registered a sharp drop compared to the number sold in January, 1927. According to compilation of the Indiana Clipping Service, 327 Empire Life Bldg., from records at the Secretary of State’s office, 800 new cars were sold this year and 1,208 In January last year. Chevrolet lead the list for January, with 215 machines. Only sixteen Fords were recorded. Number of other makes of machines sold were Essex, 84; Pontiac, 70; Buick, 56; Overland-4, 42; Overlftnd-6, 3; Oldsmobile, 37; Nash, 31; Studebaker, 27; Oakland, 26; Hudson. 23; Chrysler-6, 19; Chrys-ler-4, 4; Dodge-4, 19; Dodge-6, 8; Paige 6, 17; Paige-8, 1; Hupmobile6, 15; Hupmobile-8, 1; Marmon-8, 15; Packard-6, 11; LaSalle, 8; Auburn, 2; Cadallic, 3; Elcar, 2; Erskine, 7; Franklin, 2 h , Kissel-8, 2; Lincoln, 2; Marmon-6, 2; Peerless, 6; Reo, 2; Star-4, 4; Star-6, 3; Stutz, 2; Velie-6, 3; Willys-Knight, 7; and one each of Falcon-Knight, Jordan-6 and Pierce-Arrow. Sedans continue as the favorite model, with 384 sold. There were 233 coaches, 162 coupes, 20 roadsters and only one touring car sold. A total of 76 trucks were sold during the month. Sixteen were G. M. C. trucks, six Fords and 23 Chevrolets. For her bravery in arresting, singel-handed, a gang of white slavers in Kenosha, Wis., Miss Beulah McNeil, policewoman, has been promoted to a sergeantcy and given more pay. One of the men, declared le&der, was sentenced to five years.
Jail for Officer’s Son Bu Times Soecial RICHMOND, Ind., Feb. 3.—Harold Shaul, 29, son of Henry A. Shaul, Anderson police officer, was fined $lO and costs and sentenced to sixty days in jail when convicted in city court here on a charge of driving an automobile while drunk. The father said the son had been “a sickly boy” all his life and other witnesses testified favorably as to his character. Fills Court Clerk Vacancy Robert W. Morris, New Albany, has been named to succeed Miss Hazel M. Jackson as clerk of the New Albany branch of Federal Court by Judge Robert C. Baltzell. Miss Jackson resigned, effective on Feb. 29.

DWARF HELD IN DEATHOF GIRL Marengo Man, 65, Under Bond During Probe. Bu Times Socclol ENGLISH, Ind., Feb. 3.—Luther Sloan, 65, a dwarf who has worn woman’s garb throughout his life, is free under SI,OOO bond, while the death of Miss Ruth Judd, 18, is being investigated. The girl died following a criminal operation at Sloan’s home in Marengo, in part of which Mr, and Mrs. John Strogher, the girl’s stepfather and mother and their other children lived. She was employed by Sloan as a housekeeper. His wife, a woman of normal size and the mother of a daughter, also normal, died several years ago. Sloan is less than three feet tall. Investigation of the death was asked by Mr. and Mrs. Strogher within a week after the girl’s funeral, and the body was exhumed and examined by Coroner Louis Dooley of Crawford County. A warrant for Sloan’s arrest as a suspect followed. Further action in the case will be taken next Monday at a special session of the Crawford County grand jury. PLANS LATIN CONTEST I. U.
