INDIANA STORES OF EARLY DAYS STRONGLY BUILT Loogootee Resident Describes Structures of Which Few Remain. By United Press LOOGOOTEE, Ind., Feb. 3.—The old-time storekeeper, in his wellbuilt cabin, could close his doors and windows, pull the shutters over them and retire for the night without fear of being robbed, according to Carlos T. McCarty of Loogootee. Most of the old-fashioned store buildings, the majority of them built sixty or seventy-five years ago, passed out of existence recently. A few are still left in southern Indiana. "The old-time store was usually a frame structure, well-built, mortised and pinned together with wooden pegs," McCarty said. "The fittings were so close that scarcely any wind could blow through cracks to chill the inmates. The most important feature of the store, however, was the way it was locked up for the night.” The door of the hut was fastened With a heavy log. The windows had shutters on them that were shutters. They weren’t made of flimsy pine. They were hewed out of oak and made to fit the windows and door frames around the glass with a closeness that left no room for a "jimmy” or a chisel to enter. At the top they were fastened with strong iron pins which fitted into iron sockets. At the bottom they were drawn tightly around the window frams with a thumb screw which extended through the window sash. When the screw had been turned to the limit, it was impossible to force the window or door. IF KIDNEYS ACT BAD JAKE SALTS Says Backache Often Means You Have Not Been Drinking Enough Water When you wake up with backache and dull misery in the kidney region it may mean you have been eating foods which create acids, says a well-known authority. An excess of such acids overworks the kidneys in their effort to filter it from the blood and they become sort of paralyzed and loggy. When your kidneys get sluggish and clog you must relieve them, like you relieve your bowels, removing all the body’s urinous waste, else you have backache, sick headache, dizzy spells; your stomach sours, tongue is coated, and when the weather is bad you have rheumatic twinges. Either consult a good, reliable physician at once or get from your pharmacist about four ounces of Jad Salts; take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys may then act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for years to help clean and stimulate sluggish kidneys, also to neutralize acids in the system, so they no longer irritate, thus often relieving bladder weakness. Jad Salts is inexpensive, cannot injure and makes a delightful, effervescent lithia-water drink. Drink lots of soft water.—Advertisement.
