CHRISTIANITY IS DOMINANT FORCEJN LIFE Pastor Shows What the Purpose of Religion Really Is. “We believe that the Christianity of Jesus is the most dominant force in the world today,” the Rev. Fred A. Line said Sunday at the Central Universalist Church while speaking on “The Universalism of Christianity.” “We cherish,” the Rev. Line said, “the faith of love, which was and is the faith of Jesus and we strive to live according to its ideals and inspirations, because we think that it best embodies and expresses this great life-giving religion. What Wc Believe “We believe in the Universal Fatherhood of God, that every man is a child of God; that love is the essence of this divine relationship; and that the forces of love are operative to bring about perfection sometime somewhere in every human heart. We believe in Jesus Christ as the world’s great spiritual leader, the ideal man, the realized ideal of human possibility, the great inspirational force in the world’s spiritual development. “We do not believe that he came to bear our sins or to do our work for us, but that he was sent of God to point out to man the way of life, to impart a spirit, to vitalize human activity, and that in response to his loving spirit and sacrifice and service the world has been steadily progressing heavenward. We believe in the Bible, not after the manner of children, but after the manner of full-grown men and women, not to be swallowed whole, but to be read and studied for our good and for the good of the world. “We believe in punishment as sure and certain, but as definitely expressing an infinite love, and existing for the fulfillment of a divine purpose. “We believe in the supreme greatness and power of God, and in man as His child, and so in the persistence of the right, the ultimate triumphs of love, in the victories of God and man as universally experienced. Ours is a faith of love, a religion of experience and practice and development. Purpose of Religion “The purpose of this religion of the head and the heart is to diffuse the spirit of its great advocate, Jesus of Nazareth, in the hearts and daily lives of men. It announces in tones to be heal'd by the inner consciousness—the seat of authority in religion—that in the economy of God’s universe there is ever an eternal better awaiting us. “It strives to bring this better about by making men better now. It does not so much save men from future punishment as from present sin. Its work is not so much to keep men out of hell, but to get hell out of men. It relegates hate and fear and beseeches with love. “It says, be right, do right, thifik right, because it is right, not because you wish to escape punishment after death, nor receive reward in the future. The first is principle and the latter is policy, and religion is never a matter of policy. “It appeals to men from a high point of view' for a life of righteousness,” the Rev. Line said. SCORES INTOLERANCE Marx Speaker at Jewish Community Center. Religious intolerance was denounced as “most un-American” by Robert S. Marx, former Superior Court judge in Cincinnati, at the annual citizenship meeting at the Kirshbaum Community Center on Eunday night. “It is deplorable that a Senator ©f the United States has forgotten his oath of office and has risen on the floor of the Senate to say that A1 Smith, Governor of New York, could never become president because he is a Catholic,” Mark declared. “Whether Smith is elected is not the question concerning us, but the fact that a man aspiring to office should be put to test because of religion does concern us.” He cited the recurrent attacks on Jews in America as another indication of intolerance.
