PARIS-TO-I). S. HOPS PLANNED BY FRENCHMEN Government Backs Trip in lune; Ocean Mail Is Forecast. BY JOHN O’BRIEN United Press Staff Correspondent PARIS, Jan. 26.—Believing that ocean flying has passed the pioneer stage and that the era of practical endeavor has begun, the French government and civilian airplane manufacturers are planning fights on a huge scale for this year. Foremost among , these plans are a projected official trans-Atlantic flight from Paris to New York, via the Azores, and an attempt by Louis Bleriot, the first man to fly the Channel, to establish an aerial mail line between France and the United States. Bleriot Building Plane On account of the enormous prestige which will be the guerdon of victory in the battle against the westerly winds, which have already taken a heavy toll in lives, civilian constructors are keeping their ideas to themselves, fearing that rivals might steal them. It is known, however, that the Bleriot factory is working on the construction of an especially strong airplane, heavily powered, with a speed of 100 riffles an hour, capable of carrying a thousand pounds of mail over the ocean. The government project is in the hands of the experts of the aeronautic department of the ministry of commerce. Plan Start in June This flight will be in no sense one like Lindbergh’s or Byrd’s, but will put ipto execution a carefully thought jt plan to ascertain whether sean flights are a business proposition. It ho* been decided that the Government flight will be made by a hydroplane with a crew of three or four experienced pilots and navigators early in June. A second hydroplane will be held in readiness to take off in the event the first does not succeed. It is also possible that a stop may be made in Bermuda if inclement weather is experienced. * Sees Mail Service Although nothing has been said -bout the pilots of this first official I rans-Atlantic flight the name of Capt. Georges Pelletier Doisy, the French “ace of aces,” comes naturally to mind. Bleriot’s plans are more ambi-

tious. This famous pilot and manufacturer hopes to be able within five years to establish a regular passenger and mail service between the Old World and the New. He proposes to send a trial machine via the Azores. It will be driven by two 250 horse power engines and will weigh about eight tons, with extra heavy wings. After experiments lasting three or four years, studying wind currents and climatic conditions, Bleriot intends to employ passenger airplanes of twenty-four tons, capable of carrying forty persons, driven by 650 horse power motors. They will be equipped with a pneumatic raft.

LONGEST MOTOR ROAD IN WORLD IS AFRICAN AIM Cape to Cairo Highway Link Is Being Promoted by Noted Sportsman. By United Press LONDON, Jan. 26.—Another projest among the vast plans to bridge the world is being pushed by Sir Abe Bailey, South African magnate and sportsman. The scheme envisages the longest motor road in the world—a road linking Cairo and Capetown, through the vastness of the one continent, yet undeveloped, in fact, much unknown to the white man. Previous to his departure for Africa, after a short visit in England, Sir Abe revealed the plan for the linking of the two great cities of Africa, more than 4,000 miles apart. “I hope to get all of the governments in Africa to join together in this scheme. It would make the continent for the first time, and from one end to the other, accessible to airplanes, by giving them safe landing places. “It would attract tourists and start a vital current of energy that would penetrate everywhere and lead to the colonization of settlers and the launching of new enterprises on a scale hardly imaginable today. “It would be all to Africa that the trans-continental railways have been to America.” Among other plans put forward, some of which give promise of becoming realities at some time, is the tunnelling of the English Channel. To further this a society has been formed in both France and England. A road from New York to Buenos Aires, furnishing an airterial highway connecting North and South America, has been proposed. Tunnel Under Straits Planed Another scheme is for a tunnel under the Straits of Gibraltar to join again the great expanses of Europe and Asia with Africa, which were once before joined where the Suez Canal now is. A plan for a direct air route from London to Tokio, "across the top of the world,” or by way of the Arctic has been proposed. Another plan for an air route to Tokio from London, across Siberia, has been put forward and offers promise of early development. New York and London by train, by way of Alaska, Siberia and tence across Europe, is another project. The portages across the Bearing Seat and other water would be made by placing the railway cars on boats. MEN MADE BEAUTIFUL Face Culture Will Be Extended to Paris Stern Sex. By United Press PARIS, Jan. 26.—Beauty culture has been extended to include mere man. A Parisian firm has opened a parlor where they can purchase whatever they deem necessary for obliteration of the ravages of time. The innovation is being attacked in many quarters on the ground that although this is a sophisticated city it has not yet accepted such extreme ideas.

Destitute Indiana Miners Guard Donated Supplies
No One Permitted Alone in Store Room at Littles. By Times Special EVANSVILLE, Ind., Jan. 26. Destitution has reached a point among miners and their families in the little town of Littles, Ind., where food and clothing donated is kept locked in a storeroom and only members of a committee have keys. Not even a member is allowed in the room alone. Conditions in the town whose residents worked in a coal mine idle since last spring were revealed by a party from here which took a truck load of supplies to Littles, gift of the local Central Labor Union. William Yaser, a union official, who made the trip over almost impassable roads, says children’s shoes are most needed. “Some of the kiddies there are almost barefooted,” Yaser reports. Isolation due to bad roads adds to gloom in the town. Stores are boarded up and the place is rapidly assuming the aspect of a “ghost town.” NORMAL “CHECKING UP” Terre Haute School Sends Queries to 700 Graduates. COUNT DEFENDS U. S. WOMEN "Pals of Speed/ Description of American Wives. Bn United Press PARIS, Jan. 26.—American women have found a loyal defender in a scion of one of France’s greatest and oldest of noble families, Count Stanislas de la Rochefoucauld, whose other claim to renown is that he is the husband of one of France’s most attractive actresses, Alice Cocea. Count Stanislas declares that in a quarter of a century American women marrying into old French families have modified the physiognomy of Paris and changed its pleasures from indoor to outdoor sports. They have sent Paris society from overcrowded gilded ballrooms into the cabarets and centers of night life. “American women really run the society of present day Paris,” Count Stanislas wrote in a criticism of so-
strong, sturdy, powerful men, or beautiful healthy women.

The grandiose receptions of our father’s days have given way to mad dashes around Paris at night, from one cabaret into another.
