MAE DANCES AND MAKES A WEE TALK 'Seventh Heaven’ Is a Glorious Picture and a Splendid Movie Version of a Big Stage Hit —Harold Lloyd Still Gets Many Laughs. . By WALTER D. HICKMAN Mae Murray was a success on the revue stage before she went into the movies. On the screen, she probably will be remembered for lier work in “The Merry Widow.” She is now trading on that fame and good impression by appearing in a Publix revue, “A Merry Widow Revue.” Fame is a strange thing, but she is famous both on the
stage and the screen. She does the famous Merry Widow waltz, makes a little talk in which she says that one can get great happiness out of dancing.
She then leaves the stage to return for the purpose of doing a dance that she calls a Mae Murray affair. Her widow gown is a startling creation. She knows how to walk and that is an accomplishment. The producer has given her a background that is beautiful. In other words, Mae Murray is a striking creature on.the stage. So striking is
May McAvoy
her control that she is breaking house records every place she appears and yesterday was turn-away business at the Indiana. The girls in the revue are good dancers and their costumes are striking. The tenor and another soloist build a good atmosphere leading up to Miss Murray’s first entrance. The eccentric dancing team gets applause results with ease. From a costume standpoint, this revue is there. Charlie Davis and his orch sera furnish the music for much singing and dancing. “A Reno Divorce” is the lightest sort of movie entertainment May McAvoy is the featured player. The picture has enough closeups for about three pictures. A rich mans son is kicked out of his dad’s home because he wants to be a painter. Then the auto of a rich girl runs him down and she takes him to her home, gives him a room and lets him paint. They fall in love, he thinking that she loves another. Then another girl, a guest in the house, decides to land the artist There are many mixups, finally all ending in the artist getting the right girl. Very thin, this story, and some of the subtitles are nifties. Maurice has a knockout organ number worked around the broadcasting idea. Easily the best novelty
number that he has given for some time. Other events on the bill. At the Indianau u u “SEVENTH HEAVEN” IS GOOD ENTETAINMENT “Seventh Heaven” is the story of the love of a sewer worker in Paris for a waif that he befriended. Many things are given you in this picture. The harmonious discords
of the very common people in the slums, the loves of who seem Incapable of such affection. And how Paris fought to save itself. Nana and Diane are sisters, but Nana is a slave to absinth and nearly kills her sister to get it. Chico is a worker in the sewer and saves Diane from going to jail \mh her sister by saying

that she Is his wife. One of the strongest parts of, the picture is in the growing of Chico's love for Diane. And Phen the war. Paris goes to fight in taxicabs. A touch of history and romance. Chico says that he will appear to Diane every day at 11 o'clock and then one day they say that he Is dead. But just as the clock strikes the hour of 11 in comes Chico. He was a “flame thrower” in the army and was blinded. But to use his words: “I won’t be blind for long, for I am a remarkable fellow.” Chico, who’s ambition was to beccome a street washer, is taken by Charles Farrell. He may have been a commonplace person, but Farrell has made his character really a re-
Garden Is Ready for Recital
Mary Garden who sings at the Murat Wednesday evening under the auspices of Delta Gamma Sorority is looking forward to her vacation following the*close of her concert tour in this country. For two weeks she will be the guest of a friend in Algiers. Miss Garden is particularly interested in her visit to Africa, for it is the home of one of her greatest characterizations, “Thais.” Following the visit to Africa, she will make her customary opera te and concert appearances in England and on the continent. She will spend the summer at her villa on the Riviera. “I love Chicago,” said the diva,” I love the rush, and the noise, and the crowds. I love the smell of the stock yards. But I never have any time to entertain. In Europe I make up for lost time. This summer I am going to have many parties, both formal and Informal. There will be only one restriction on my guests. They will not be allowed to mention the word opera. “Oh I shall sing whenever I please, though,” she added. “And I shall probably add something new to my repertoire, but most of all, I shall have a very good time. The Riviera is the very place to meet ones friends. Someone is always popping up from Chicago or New York. “I swim every day and have my sunbath. I play tennis a great deal, too. I read many things during the summer that I do not have tim# for in the winter. Activity is the surest means of keeping fit, and It’s quite as important that the mind

markable fellow. This Is one of the strongest bits that I have seen on the screen lately. Diane, the girl who was afraid but was changed by Chico, is played by Janet Gaynor. It is a bit difficult to analyze this young woman’s work, for she has given everything to make Diane more than a character. She has created a ideal in this work. Her work is beautiful and here she has had a chance to put nearly every emotion that a person is capable of into one part. Gobin, 'Chicr. s neighbor and fellow street washer, is taken by David Butler. Bo il, a taxi driver, is played by Albert Green. George Stone is the sewer rat. These are all close friends of Chico and go to war with him. “Seventh Heaven” is an unusual picture in that it deals with the commonplace in a romantic way. Here is good theater. On the stage Bayes and Speck, who were with “The Spider,” have rol'ed a whole vaudeville act into a few minutes. They have some jokes that are passably funny and they are really good dancers. This team is fairly good, but better have been seen here. At the Circle. (By the Observer.) n n u LLOYD PROVES HIS WORTH AGAIN Harold Lloyd made “Grandma’s Boy” some years ago, and it was a hit when new. It has been reissued and broadly announced as a revival. No claim is made that this one is anew
Lloyd movie. All the advance data on this picture was that it is a reissue because it is considered one of the funniest movies that the comedian has made. It was interesting yesterday at the Apollo to see the audience laugh just as loud and long as if it were anew Lloyd comedy. You re-

call the story—it is about a boy who thought he was a coward and yet when he got into action he was the bravest of the brave. He captures a real bad man and beats up on his rival in love. Really, this comedy does not appear old-fash-ioned. Here is broad fun done in the Harold Lloyd way. Whoever was responsible for this revival certainly knew his business. I have always considered “Grandma’s Boy” as one of his best comedies. On the bill is an excellent travel movie—showing a 3 000-mile exploration trip through Brazil. Splendid.
be exercised as well as the body. Loafing doesn’t relax or rest me. It is change of interests that is refreshing. I am immensely interesting in astronomy. The exact sciences are good, too, for one w r ith work like mine. “Every day is a strenuous one for me, but I have a wonderful way of refreshing myself for the evening. I always dress for dinner. A change of clothes will do wonders for one. Clothes do more than merely change one’s appearance. They change the most intimate part of one’s environment.”

Verdict of the Movies APOLLO—Harold Lloyd in a reissue, “Grandma’s Boy,” is getting as many laughs as if this was a brand new one. INDIANA—Of course Mae Murray is the big drawing card on this bill. ClßCLE—“Seventh Heaven” is good dramatization of a stage hit, having as-its locale the slums of Paris. Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor are in it. Beautiful picture. OHlO—There is good comedy in “Sharp Shooters,” with George O’Brien playing the part of a sailor and Lois Moran the dancer.
The news reel has some excellent views of President Coolidge in Cuba. Also splendid. The bill includes Emil Seidel and his orchestra and Ray Winings at the pipe organ. At the Apollo. nun NICE COMEDY AT THE OHIO Here is the story of a sailor who saw the world, but not through a port-hole. George was known as a sharp shooter. Translated that means, as I was able to figure it out, a fellow who loved and lost with no regrets what so ever. He took his fun where he found it and then forgot all about it. “Sharp Shooters,” recounts the one adventure in which George
aimed rather poorly. He met Lorette in a dive of some sort in Morocco. She was a nautch dancer there, never before had she loved. Then George came along, and she fell. He told her to come to New York. So she did. And she found him. And lots of other things happened. Among which was a shotgun wed-'

ding between George and Lorette. He finally fought for her and then confessed that he really did love her, so everything was all right. George O’Brien makes a rather romantic figure as the sailor. And true of the stories that are told of sailors, he was always ready for a fight. In this he was always helped by Tom and Jerry, his two buddies. Their final coup was the cleaning up of Murdock, the bootlegger, and his gang. Lorette Is played by Lois Moran. As the dancer she is intriguing, and as the wife of George she shows that she is capable of a good deal of temper. This picture is light and has a lot of comedy in it. Joseph Swickard is in the cast. Tom is played by Noah Young and Jerry by Tom Dugan. These two are admirable support for O’Brien. Connie's Band this week is featuring “Henry's Made a Lady Out of Lizzie,” anew song and they put some comedy in it. At the Ohio. (By the observer). nun MYRA HESS IS A GREAT ARTIST After hearing Myra Hess at the Academy of Music yesterday afternoon play Chopin’s “Sonata in B Flat Minor,” which includes the famous funeral march, I am convinced that she is really a great artist, a pianist of rare and commanding power. She did things with this Chopin

sonata that is seldom revealed upon the concert stage. She did not get lost in the heavy movement of the march. She was sure at all times while playing Chopin. She is an intelligent player and although essentially feminine she has a definite and powerful touch. Even in the light Brahms waltzes she did not lose the light, haunting beauty of the melodies. Her opening group was Bach’s “French Suite, No. 5,” which was splendidly portrayed. It was necessary for.me to leave before her final group. This artist brings great joy to her concerts. She deserves the right to be considered a great artist. She was presented by the Indianapolis Maennerchor. Other theaters today offer: Ann Codee at Keith’s; Crisp Sisters at the Lyric; “Tommy’’ at English's and burlesque at the Mutual.
UPDIKE jACES FIGHT Gossip Mentions Rivals for Congress Berth. Political speculation on the Seventh district (Marion County) congressional post has failed, thus far, to awaken Interest comparable to that of the governorship, although some half-dozen names have filtered into the gossip. Louis Ludlow, veteran Washington correspondent, Is conceded a good chance to get the Democratic nomination by acclamation. On the Republican side, Ralph E. Updike, who wears the Seventh district congressional toga, is known to be ambitious for re-election. “New deal” Republicans predict trouble for Updike because of the reported agreement with D. C. Stephenson to deliver patronage, including the Indianapolis postmastership in return for Klan support. Others mentioned for the nomination are Merrill Moores, attorney and ex-congressman, who lost the Republican nomination to Updike in the last primary election; James M. Ogden, corporation counsel under the late Mayor Shank, who was another of Updike’s rivals in the nominative race, and Sidney Miller, former Marion Superior Court judge.
