USE TARIFF AS CLUB TO FORCE FARMAID BILL McNary-Haugen Backers to Seek Coolidge Signature by 'Threats.’ BY FLORA G. ORR WASHINGTON, Jan. 20.—The tariff weapon will be used to force President Coolidge to sign the Mc-Nary-Haugen farm relief bill, if this passes the Senate and the House. For three years undercover threats have been made to bring the tariff question on the floor of the Senate and the House and split the issue wide open, in an effort to aid the American farmer. Democrats, of course, have mentioned the high tariffs right along, have complained that President Coolidge made no use of the flexible provision of the tariff law excepting to raise the tariff on a few unimportant items. But in general the Republicans stayed off this subject until Senator McMaster of South Dakota broke loose in a fiery speech a few days ago. HiS speech has been supported on both sides of the chamber. A resolution proposed by him that the Senate go on record as favoring “revision” of the tariff schedule, meaning that in the case of everything the farmer buys for himself or his home, the revision should be a reduction, passed by a big majority. In the meantime, the House, unMothers, Do This — When the children cough, rub Musterole on their throats and chests. No telling how soon the symptoms may develop into croup, or worse. der the leadership of Dickinson of lowa, will go to the mat on a proposition to increase the tariff on everything the farmer produces. Old guard Republicans do not want to change the tariff law, and many of the farm relief leaders will admit that when a surplus of any product is produced in the country, a high tariff on that product will not result in a high price for the product. Hence, the real result which Democrats and farm relief Republicans hope to accomplish is enactment of a farm relief measure to which Calvin Coolidge will affix his signature. ‘TEMPORARILY INSANE,’ PLEA AFTER WEDDING Evansville Man Files Suit to Annul Marriage. flu Times Rnecinl EVANSVILLE, Ind., Jan. 20. “Temporary insanity” induced by Cupid and John Barleycorn “put one ovfcr” on Paul McCutchan, he alleges in a suit on file here seeking lo annul his marriage to Ruth Orr McCutchan.
