ENGLISH CHURCH REPORT SPURS SPLITJREAT Fear Catholic Faction May Withdraw; Prayer Book Changes Doomed. s t'V United Preii LONDON, Jan. 19.—The tense controversy already existent in the church of England—mainly over rapproachment with the Roman Catholic Church and ritualistic forms of worship—had become more acute today through publication of a report of negotiations between representatives of the “high church” faction of the Church of England and high Catholic churchmen. Conferences between the two groups, in an attempt to heal the breach of 400 years between the two churches, were held intermittently between 1921 and 1925 at Malines, see of the late Cardinal Mercier. A report on the negotiations has been kept secret for five years. Fear Split In Church Pears were expressed today that instead of bringing about any forms of peace between the two factions of the Church of England, the publication of the Malines conversations might have one of two undesired effects: 1. End of all hope of obtaining approval for the modernized revision of the prayer book. 2. Cause withdrawal from the Church of England of the “high church” or Anglo-Catholic faction. Only the Anglican agreements were made public. This was out of deference to the wishes of the late Cardinal Mercier, under whose auspices the conferences were held. “Negative conclusions, whatever they may be, would necessarily provoke polemics in the press, reawaken ancient animosities, accentuate divisions, thus harming the cause to which we have resolved to devote ourselves,” Cardinal Mercier wrote to the Archbishop of Canterbury on Oct. 25, 1925. Agree on Pope’s Supremacy Two of the major points that the Anglicans agreed to during course of the conversations were: 1. That the Anglo-Catholics had acknowledged the supremacy of the pope. 2. That “in the communion the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ are verily given, taken and received by the faithful. By consecration the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ.” One of the moot questions which came before the conference was brought about at the second meeting, March 14 and 15, 1023. This meeting was set aside as a discussion of practical matters that would have to be decided upon before a full unity could be made. This discussion was based upon the sovereignty of the pope. At the third meeting, Nov. 7 and 8, 1923, there was a keen discussion based on foundation of the Roman Catholic Church and papal authority. Baptism constitutes a means of entry into the church and initiation which baptism inaugurates ought to develop within an organized social life. “2. The serial life of Christians is organized and bound by the Episcopal hierarchy. “3. This social organized life finds expression within the church in the existence and use of the sacraments. “4. The body and Jood of cur Lord Jesus Christ verily is given, taken and received by the faithful. By the consecration, bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. “5. The sacrifice of the eucharist is the same sacrifice as the cross, but offered in a mystical, sacramental manner.”

HOOVER’S FOES PREPARE PLAN TO SPLIT VOTE Mellon’s Reported Swing to Secretary Cause of Counter Attack. BY RAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, Jan. 19.—Reports that Secretary Mellon might support Herbert Hoover for the Republican presidential nomination have aroused the latter’s enemies and precipitated the first signs of a counter attack. Despite protestations that they are not fighting Hoover in demanding an uninstructed delegation, certain New York leaders have met the Mellon stroke by advancing Frank Lowden as the man with whom Hoover’s expected convention drive can be halted. But their real candidate is Vice President Dawes, who is expected to inherit most of Lowden’s delegates and is more favorable to Wall St. than is Hoover. With the Lowden contingent, variously estimated at from 100 to 200 delegates, the anti-Hoover group plans to sow a large crop of favorite sons. They recognize that their one hope of blocking Hoover is to keep him from winning the nomination within the first five ballots. If they can hold him that long, they believe they can effect combinations fatal to his fortunes. Conflicting reports of how soon Mellon might swing Pennsylvania’s seventy-nine delegates to his cabinet colleague are disturbing both Hoover and opposing factions. If Pennsylvania holds off for several ballots, the opposition may have enough breathing spell to consolidate its forces. But if Pennsylvania swings to Hoover on the second or third ballot, the cabinet officer will be hard to stop. Both Hoover and his opponents await the next six weeks with some anxiety. By that time the reaction

The Hoover people hope It will start a bandwagon, so they can shout that Mellon’s failure to start a stampede means Hoover has passed the peak of his strength. It is also expected that Hoover may announce his formal candidacy in time to enter the New Hampshire primary, in which he would probably be an easy winner.
