FAVORS RAISE IN WAGES OF ( ALLPRISONERS Indiana Trustee Declares Parent Evils Would * Be Ended. ty Vnitcd Press KNOX, Ind., Jan. 18.—A nation ■wide movement to raise pay of prisoners employed in manufacturing articles in competition with free labor in order to prevent the competition that is so disastrous to manufacturers employing the latter has been started by John Moorman of Knox, Indiana State Prison trustee. Moorman returned from Washington this week after having conferred with the congressional committee on labor concerning his plans. He urged wardens of all prisons be called to Washington to confer on the problem, which he declares “is of paramount importance, not only to manufacturers and prison officials, but to the people as a whole, as it will help to reduce the operating costs of the institutions. “Prisoners in Indiana are paid an average of more than $1 a day for their labor, whereas in the majority of prisons the laborers are paid less than sl,” Moorman pointed out. “It is our plan to have a minimum of $1.50 per day, which would insure fair competition for the turers on the open market. As conditions exist the effect on free labor manufacturers is disastrous and extremely unfair. ‘“By paying our laborers a decent wage we have on deposit for the prisoners now more than SIOO,OOO. Each prisoner, upon being freed receives his full savings. Under the new system, even more could be saved, and the prisoners would be able to provide for themselves from the time their sentences expire until they obtain employment.” OPEN NEW LAW OFFICE Lieut. F. F. Knachel and Henry C. Morgan Form Firm. Lieut. F. F. Knachel, former commanding officer at Camp Gridley, boys’ summer naval reserve camp at Riverside and commanding officer of the 18th Fleet division of the United States Naval Reserve, today announced he has opened a law office. He will be associated with Henry C. Morgan, of Huntington, with offices at 1158 Consolidated Bldg.
SAYS THE ACTION OF THIS KGNJOLA v MS SURPRISING This New Medicine Banished Constipation and Cleansed His Whole System. “I’ve been helped so much by this Konjola that I can’t help talking about it and praising it to people who are suffering,” said Mr. H. a few days ago with The Konjola Man at Hook’s Drug Store, Illinois and Washington Sts., where crowds are calling daily to find out for themselves about this surprising new Konjola compound. “The action of Konjola was surprising in my case,” continued Mr. Hockersmith, “because it cleansed my whole system and built me up in so many ways that I am feeling better than I have for the past five or six years.” “My main trouble had been constipation, from which I suffered for twenty years, and I am stating the facts when I tell you that Konjola proved to be just what I had needed to banish the poisons which caused my whole system to be upset for years. “My stomach was also giving me a lot of trouble, and I ccjuld hardly And a thing to eat which would agree with me. My food would sour, ferment and bloat me so that I felt stuffed up and sometimes had a hot, feverish sensation from my throat to the pit of my stomach. Frequent headaches and bilious attacks would overcome me, and besides, I very seldom got a decent night’s rest. In the mornings I would get up feeling like I was all beaten down. Finally, all these miseries sapped my strength so that my health was a complete wreck. “As soon as I found out that this Konjola was made up of juices from plants, such as roots, herbs, etc., I decided to try it, and now that I have taken a course of this medicine I can say with confidence that my constipation is ended, my stomach is again working in the best condition and I am feeling better in every, way.i Yes, the action of Konjola certainly surprised me, as I didn’t expect such quick relief from all my health troubles and 141 m glad to indorse tins medicine to the public.” The Konjola Man is at the Hook Drug Store, Illinois and Washington Sts., Indianapolis, where he is daily meeting the public and introducing and explaining the merits of this remedy. Konjola is sold by every Hook store in this city and by all druggists throughout this section.— Advertisement, . ,
GALLI-RINI HAS A WICKED MUSIC BOX Capitol Theatre Trio in Its New Record Brings Out the Enchanting Beauty of ‘Kiss Me Again/ a Pleasing Hit From 'Mile. Modiste/ BY WALTER D. HICKMAN I guess that “wicked music” must come from a “wicked music box.” Am sure that Galli-Rini has one of the most “wicked” accordions in captivity.
This time it is a pleasant job to compare the recordings of GalliRini with himself in person. This week at Keith’s, we have Galli-Rini and his sister. Brunswick has just sent me one of GalliRini’s new record, which consists of "Blue Heaven” and “Miss Annabelle Lee.” Os course these two tunes make a corking popular combination and these two numbers do not lose their beauty and tempo on Galli-Rini's accordion. This man is a wonder in getting broad pipe organ tones from his music box and the record captures this beauty in an excellent manner. He first plays “Blue Heaven” along a ballad line and then puts it into a jazz trot before the windup. The other evening when he was on the air over WKBF. I played the “Blue Heaven” record just as he finished it over the air. It is jolly fun to make this comparison. I must confess that I have always had a weakness for “Mile. Modiste’’ and I was tickled pink when I discovered that Okeh has released this number, with the Capitol Theater trio, strings, playing this wonderful melody. On the other side we have the soothing grace and beauty of “The Rosary-” Dr, Eugene Armandy Is the director of the trio. Here is a fine trio that goes into those quiet and soothing intimate effects so often missing in modem playing. These two numbers have been expertly recorded. This is just the sort of music that you will enjoy playing as you sit home alone thinking over some problem. Have just received from Vocalion anew A1 Bernard record. A1 is a comedian and he gets a bunch of fun out of “Twenty-Five Years From Now” and “Li’l Liza Jane.” Have been asked to recommend some recordings from “A Connecticut Yankee” which is a hit on Broadway. Columbia has just sent me two numbers from this hit, “My Heart Stood Still” and “Thou Swell.” The vocal chorus is furnishted by that expert, Franklyn Baur. The music is furnished by an organization new to me, the Broadway Nitelites. Good record. A1 Bernard on an Okeh has two records, “Hesitation Blues” and “St. Louis Blues.” Am qultfe wild over two old timers just released by Okeh. The numbers are “Lindy Lou by the Watermelon Vine” and “Kentucky Babe” as done by Leo White. Oh, these two old time numbers will make you wear the smile of melodious contentment. It may not be great music, but I know that it sure pleases my ear. Get this one if you want two old standbys splendidly done. Frederic Frandkin, violinist, has a classic in his new Brunswick record, "Souvenir” and “Traumerei.” Beautifully played. Indianapolis theaters today offer: “King of Kings” in its final showing at English’s today; Charlie Davis and his orchestra at the Indiana; Charles Withers at Keith’s; “The Private Life of Helen of Troy” at the Circle; James Burke and Eleanor Durkin at the Lyric; burlesque at the Mutual; “Quality Street” at the Apollo; “Annie Laurie” at the Ohio and movies at the Isis.
