YOUNG ‘BANDITS' PLEAD HUNGER Boys Say They Tried to Rob So They Could Eat. Two youths, who used a gun they said was unloaded to start out as bandits, were repentant at police headquarters today, after staging two fultilc holdups Tuesday night. The two youths. Walter Steagall, 17, who has been living .with an aunt at 1249 S. Pershing Ave„ and Charles Ashley, 19. of 214 Beauty Ave., both cited their inability to find work. “My mother and I didn't have a bite to eat all day Tuesday. My father’s been dead since 1912, and my mother’s sick and can’t work,” Ashley said. Steagall declared he had been forced to leave home, because he had no work and had been living with an aunt. They met in front of a poolroom at 6 p. m. and decided to pick a dark street and holdup the first person who canic, along, they told detectives. Steagall had a revolver he bought three weeks ago from a 6trange man. Several hours later they held up Ernest Turner, 23, of 234 N. Blackford St„ at Blackford St. and the canal. They got only 23 cents and returned the money. Turner ran to Washington and Blackford St., and reported the holdup to Sergeant Coleman and Patrolman Harms. In Harms’ auto they searched the vicinity and caught the two youths on New York St. After holding up Turner, the youths said they held up a Negro, but obtained no money.
