RACING FLEET MAY PUT U. S. 'BACK ON SEA' Four-Day Service to Europe Part of Gigantic Plan of Corporation. BY RAY TUCKER WASHINGTON, Jan. 10.—A revo-' lutionary proposal lor restoring America's merchant marine with fleets of fast ships modeled after the new airplane carrier Saratoga has has been presented to the Shipping Board by Lawrence It. Wilder, head of the American Brown Eoveri Electric Corporation, and a group of associates, including ship builders and operators, financiers and railroad executives. Four-clay service to Europe from a new pert to be constructed northeast of New York, probably near New London, Conn., has been planned by this group. With a reg- ! ular ship-to-shore airplane service,! they, eventually intend to cut the i time distance to three days. Sailings with.chips 927 feet long and capable of thirty-five knots an hour will be inaugurated by 1920, i Wilder said y today, in an exclusive! interview with the Scripps-Howard I newspapers. This is the first time [ details of his long-awaited project! have been divulged. B : g Capital Assured The undertaking, which has just received assurances of $50,000,000 capital, and ship construction problems, by four committees of distinguished naval architects, marine engineers, economists and traffic man- | agers.
Actual construction of model vessels has taken place at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, which al::o is owned by Wilder’s firm. The four-day ships would be of the type of the Saratoga, which was built by Wilder's company, with changes necessitated by the different kind cf service. Whereas the Majestic of the Cunard line makes fourteen round trips a year at an average cost of $250,000 a trip, economists and engineers have declared that the proposed vessels could make thirty-seven trips at an average cost of $175,000.* Want Federal Aid Government aid is wanted for a ccnstructiotr fund totalling 75 per cent of the vessels’ cost, the Government to take a lien, mail-carrying contracts and partial insurance of the vast amount of property involved. But it is proposed to inaugurate the four-day service even If Federal help is not forthcoming. Iri return for Government assistance, backers of the new project may purchase at market rates many Government vessels now in the Atlantic and Gulf trade. This however, would follow from the fact that the four-day, thirty-five-knot ships are expected to make regular operation of the older type an economic impossibility, though they could be used on certain routes. Purchase of the Government vessels is only a secondary consideration in the larger program. Many New Factors Greater speed and more economical operation, labor and time-sav-ing devices in discharging cargoes and only a one-day layover for each ship in port are said to be the factors which may make the proposed vessels as revolutionary a steo in maritime development as the Monitor and Merrimac were in naval warfare. Wilder said that by 1930 he would have enough ships to replace Shipping Board lines in the North Atlantic service. It is understood that certain Government officials have expressed approval of the scheme during negotiations within the last few days.
