EXILE TROTSKY AND 52 OTHERS FROMJIISSIA Banishment of Opposition Leaders for 3 Years, Soviet Order. BY FREDERICK KUII United Press Staff Correspondent BERLIN, Jan. 10.—Banishment frem Russia cf fifty-two leaders of the opposition to the soviet government has been ordered and in some Instances already has taken place, the United Press learned today. These banished include Leon Trotsky, who once shared with .Nikolai Lenine, the supreme power An Russia. Reports that banishment of thirty leaders was impending have been in circulation, but confirmation and additional details were not available until today. Trotsky, who in the past few months gradually has been shorn of the last vestige of his former position, is still in Moscow, but has been ordered to Astrakhan, on the Black Sea. Others have been ordered to and! some actually sent, to remote por-, tions of Rpssia. Exile for Three Years The period of exile for all is three years and during that time each will receive a pittance of nine rubles (about $4.50> monthly. The fifty-two exiles were ordered separated and each sent to a diffetent place, most of them hundreds of miles from civilization. Fears were expressed here that some of the exiles would not survive, as some of the regions of exile are cholera or plague-stricken. It was rumored that the banishment followed differences between Stalin and the secret service. The latter insisted upon imprisonment or even more ruthless measures, it was reported. Stalin was said to have contended that banishment was sufficient. Trotsky was sentenced to do government work at Astrakhan, but he was reported to have refused, saying ho could be more useful in Moscow. He is still in Moscow. Dispute Over Factories The immediate cause of the banishment was certain incidents in the factories of Moscow and the Bogoronsk districts. Workers refused to renew their collective agreements with the State management, after insisting upon better conditions. Stalin attributed the disaffection to the subversive activities of the opposition. Fiatakoff, former trade representative in Paris, escaped with the mildest punishment, he merely being ordered to Australia' to arrange wool purchases. Piatakoff, however, declined. Reports that Zinovieff and Kameneff, had been banished were declared untrue. Zinovieff is writing a pamphlet said to contain an attack upon Trotsky.
