WASHINGTON SOCIETY NEWS
By FLORA G. ORR, United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Jan. 7.—Washington women on the first morning of the New Year, lazily reached for the bells, summoned the maids, ate their leisurely breakfast in bed. Then they arose to get ready for the New Year's reception at the White House. And almost with one accord, they donned black velvet gowns. Mrs. Robert Lansing, Mrs. Perry Belmont, Mrs. Dwight Davis, Mrs. James J. Davis, Mrs. Curtis D. Wilbur, Mrs. Harry New. Mrs. Frank B. Kellogg, Mrs. William Jardine, Mrs. Herbert Hoover—all in black velvet, and small black hats. Even Mrs. Coolidge herself wore a dress which was half black velvet. The other half of it was silver cloth. But Alice Longworth wore a printed velvet dress. o s If It were known back home how some of the big he-men Western Congressmen dressed themselves up for the White House reception, it might go hard on them in the next election! Every detail just as you see it in the pictures in the fashion magazines! Silk hat 'n everything. But in the places where conservatism rules, another shock would have registered, at the sight of a strictly up-to-the-minute young diplomat, who appeared at the White House reception dressed in a colored shirt with a soft collar. He knows what he is doing, however, for latest advices from London, the men’s style center, are to the effect that such a shirt may be used on formal occasions. What is known in Washington as the bob-tailed morning coat was much in evidence at this reception. Long tails are going. m * m Announcement was mads In Washington this week of the engagement of Miss Polly Ar ne Colver to Mark Harris, New York. Miss Colver is the daughter of the late William B.
