FLAY SMOKING; WOMAN PASTOR BANJDEPLORED M. E. Missionary Society Disclaims Responsiblity in Controversy. Sm United Press CHICAGO, Jan, 6.—The Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was on record today as deploring smoking, but disclaiming responsibility for the barring of Miss Maude Royden, English preacher, from making public appearances because she accepted the practice. Local committees in the cities involved cancelled Miss Royden’3 engagements, Mrs. Dan B. Brummitt of the missionary society said. A formal statement issued by Mrs. Brummitt last night said: “When it was learned that Miss Royden had accepted the English custom of smoking, a conference was called of all general officers (of the society) and all local committees. “It was decided that, while as American Christian women, they deplored the practice, they could not presume to judge the integrity and religious life of such a woman as Miss Royden. “Later at Chicago and Boston, the arrangements for Miss Royden’s lectures were cancelled by local committees.” Engagement Is Cancelled Bu United Press PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 6. —The Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal church here has decided to cancel the engagement of Miss Maude Royden to speak at its luncheon, Jan. 19. Mrs. William Peace, chairman of the committee, said the cancellation was due not so much to the fact that smoking and drinking as to the notoriety accompanying her statement.

New West Park Pastor Scoffed at Obstacles
Gave Church to Princeton by Indomitable Toil, After Disaster. “To win in spite of obstacles” has been the creed of the Rev. N. L. Collins, new pastor of the West Park Christian Church, who recently moved with his family to Indianapolis from Princeton, Ind., where he was leader of the Broadway Christian congregation. Mr. Collins has overcome obstacles that to many another man would seem impossible to surmount. He took charge of the Princeton Church immediately following the disastrous tornado there several years ago. The church was demolished, and the congregation completely discouraged with their personal disasters. Realizing the difficulties of arousing interest in anew church building at such time, the preacher pluckily planned an even better structure than the congregation had before. Federal Judge Robert C. Baltzell, Indianapolis, became interested in his work and gave anew parsonage to the congregation. Before Mr. Collins was called to the West Park group, the Princeton Church had acquired property valued at $75,000. The membership of his church had doubled and three ministers had been ordained by him. Mr. Collins’ problem at the West Park Christian Church is the raising of the church debt. Though he has been in Indianapolis but a short while, he already has become enthusiastic about the overcoming of his new difficulty. “You see, it really seems like a family affair, this debt,” said Mr. Collins. “I used to play baseball with many members of my new con-

VONNEGUT F= Expected to Be R School Board Ht Re-election of Theodore negut as school board presit today was expected.
Charles W. Kern, majority faitTon member, has been mentioned prominently for the post, but he is understood to be satisfied with chairmanship of ; the buildings and grounds committee, which he now holds. With the two new members on the board, Lewis E. Whiteman and Fred Kepner, succeeding Fred Bates Johnson and Charles R. Yoke, members are not certain what alliances will be made, but it is thought the old majority faction composed of Vonnegut, Kern and Mrs. Lillian V. Sedwick will retain its identity.
