LINDY’S PLANE REALIZED UPON HOOSIER’S PLAN Major Waterhouse For-, merly Lived in La Porte. Bu United Press LA PORTE, Ind., Jan. 6.—“ The Spirit of St. Louis,” Col. Charles A. Lindbergh's famous monoplane, was designed by Maj. William J. (Curley) Waterhouse, former La Porte resident, it rxas been learned from friends of the Waterhouse family living here. * Many “old timers” here recall Waterhouse as a curly-haired lad, who at first built miniature models and later designed a real machine when heavier-than-air flying was almost undreamed of. In this machine Waterhouse gave exhibition flights throughout the Mid-West. It is said by aviation authorities that he actually made a successful flight in a heavier-than-air craft before the Wright brothers had succeeded in getting their machine into the air at Kittyhawk. Worked for Curtiss Waterhouse began his real work as a plane designer while an employe of the Chicago Aerial Corporation. Later he joined the technical staff of the Curtiss Airplane and Motor Company. During the World War he designed the famous Curtiss speed scout, and a few months afterward took charge of production of the DH-4 plans at McCook field in San Diego. He began his career when 23 years old and was made a major in the United States flying corps at 32. With his wide experience in aeronautics, Major Waterhouse finally started a plane factory of his own. In addition to the Ryan monoplane type used by Lindbergh he also produced the Waterhouse “Roamair,” a small scout biplane type, and the Waterhouse “Curzair,” a large biplane. Lindbergh Placed Order Before making his historic transAtlantic flight, Lindbergh made careful inspection of various airplanes manufactured throughout the United States and was very favorably impressed with Waterhouse’s monoplane style and asked the latter to produce one capable of spanning the Atlantic. At that time Waterhouse was moving his factory to Hollywood, Cal., and informed Lindbergh he could not produce a plane in time for the hop. In order to accomodate the famous airman, however, he sold his patterns and patents to the Ryan Company. This company built the “other half of We” which made the Paris flight. Waterhouse had no specal training, obtaining his knowledge by actual flying and continued experiments. He obtained his education in local schools and his drafting ability was cultivated by Prof. F. H. Simons, until recently a Laporte high school art instructor. France has a waterfall at Gavamie which is 1385 feet in height. Niagara Falls is only 164 feet high.

AIR MAIL RATE TO BE CUT BY HALFJMONTH Increase in Service Forecast by Author of Statute for Reduction. BY KENNETH WATSON WASHINGTON, Jan. 6.—The Postofflce Department plans to cut present air mail rates in half within a month. Representative Clyde Kelly, Pennsylvania, made this announcement today in introducing a bill which will permit the department to reduce rates to one-fourth of the present charges. “My bill provides for amending the present law so the minimum charge will be 5 cents an ounce instead of 10 cents. The proposal has the support of many postal officials,” Kelly said. Kelly predicted if his bill passed and the Postofflce Department charges the minimum rate the air mail business will be tripled immediately. “It would then be possible to send a letter by air mail from one end of the continent to the other for 5 cents instead of 20 cents, as at present,” Kelly said. Kelly’s bill also contains features designed to place the air mail business on a permanent footing. One provision will give the Postmaster General authority to issue to contractors air mail certificates which will enable them to hold their routes as long as they comply with postal regulations and give the public good service. “The present law provides that an air mail contract is valid only for four years and this fact is a deterrent to contractors spending as much money as should be for the service,” Kelly said. 115,398 in Ft. SLACK SCBRES ZDNINC LAXITY FORJIEALTORS Homes Must Be Protected Against Encroachment, Mayor Declares. Operation of the zoning law in Indianapolis for the last few years was hit by Mayor L. Ert Slack, at the Real Estate Board luncheon at the Chamber of Commerce Thursday. He declared business district zoning must be stabilized to protect present and future home sites. “Indianapolis, in the last several years, has been zoning to a more extensixe scale than was healthy for the city,” he said. "Indianapolis must stop promiscuous zoning; the giving of all comers to business, and must restrict and stabilize business districts to protect residential districts of the future.” Homes Need Protection He declared that many fine residential sections have been destroyed by permitting the invasion of business, and that unless business districts are restricted more in the future, present and prospective home
