NEW HOSPITALS TO AID VICTIMS f OF WORLD WAR Two Near Completion and Three More Will Be Started Soon. BY C. J. LILLEY . WASHINGTON, Jan. 3.—Two new hospitals nearing completion and three more in contemplation is the Veterans’ Bureau building program for 1928. Fifty-one hospitals are in operation, with 26,206 patients. New ones will raise the total to fifty-six. The next, to be completed in April, is located at Northport, N. Y., and provides 1,000 beds for mental cases. It will be followed in June by completion of the institution at Bedford, Mass., with 350 beds and facilities for possible increase to 800 or 1,000. With their completion, the Veterans’ Bureau expenditure for construction, maintenance and operation of hospitals is raised to $424,178,169. ’ Three Hospitals Proposed The three proposed hospitals, as oultined by J. H. Tripp, chief of the construction division, are: Three-hundred-bed general hospital at Portland, Ore., bids having been opened on this last Friday. toJfl,? alsflnEr mßeuh d:xxanuum Four-hundred-bed general hospital at Camp Beauregard, near Alexandria, La. Bids are to be received and construction work started in the'spring. Fifty-bed general hospital at Fargo, N. D., also planned for spring construction. The Northport hospital is one of the largest yet to be erected. The total contract price is $3,283,762. The site comprises 550 acres and in all thirty-five buildings are included. The hospital proper is of fireproof construction. Twenty Buildings in Group „ The Bedford hospital group includes twenty buildings. The proposed Portland hospital group will have fourteen buildings and be located on twenty-five acres of park land donated by the University of Oregon. Although a general institution, there will be previsions for tubercular and mental cases. All buildings will be fireproof. The Camp Beauregard hospital group will have seventeen buildings, all fireproof and all of hollow-tile and stucco exterior. The Fargo hospital will consist of one main building and sufficient smaller ones to accommodate the personnel. It also will be fireproof. The Veterans’ Bureau will continue to need hospitals for World War veterans for at least forty years, officials predict. £NOW DRIFTS, 18 FEET ' HIGH, BLOCK ROAD I Detour Near Lowell on U. S. Rd. 41 I Is Completely Closed. Snow drifts, some of which were reported to be eighteen feet high, completely have closed the detour on U. S.t Rd. 41, for twenty miles between! Lowell and Lunster, Ind., State highway department officials reported today. Director John D. Williams despatched a 20-ton caterpillar tractor and a grader with a 12-inch blade to fight the drifts. It is expected to be several days before the detour can be used. Lincoln highway was reported closed west of Valparaiso, Ind., but was expected to be open within twenty-four hours, if there is no more snowfall. Many local roads and some other State roads throughout northern Indiana were snow blocked Sunday and Monday, but most had been ‘•dug out” today. CLOSE FARM MEETING Bureau Directors to Adjourn TwoDay Session This Afternoon. Indiana Farm Bureau Federation directors discussed organization affairs at federation headquarters here today. The annual two-day session was to close late this afternoon. Lewis Taylor of Newburgh, first vice president, was chosen Monday to head the new division of tax and research. Everett Hunt of Richmond, and Oscar W. Larm of Oxford, were named to the executive committee. President W. H. Settle is the third member. Department heads reappointed included Lee R. Highlen of Liberty Center, director of livestock marketing; Oscar A. Swank of Crawfordsville, assistant; H. R. Nivens of Brooklyn, director of automobile insurance division: and Mrs. Verna Hatch, Huntington, director of social and educational work. Two of their children and two children of Mulac’s former marriage saw the killing and suicide. The Yale endowment fund has been oversubscribed by more than $250,000, according to word received here. Seventy-one Indianapolis persons subscribed $57,625 to the $2,000,000 fund, while 122 Indiana persons subscribed a total of $72,798. Mrs. Robert Loy, 1300 N; Pennsylvania St., asked police today to recover her traveling bag left in a taxi cab Saturday night. Mrs. Loy said after she paid the driver at her home he started up before she could remove the bag. It contained clothing valued at $l5O. Police have been asked to search for John Whitt, 65, of Mickleyville, Ind., who has been missing since Dec. 26. MAIL PILOT RESCUED Forced Down in Blizzard; Paces Hunting Lodge Floor to Keep Warm. Bit) United Press DUBOIS, Pa., Jan. 3.—H. G. Smith, air mail pilot, who was forced to land his plane Sunday night near Medix Run, was recovering today from cold and exposure. En route from Cleveland to New York, Smith was forced down in the dark when a blizzard made flying impossible. With the mercury below zero. Smith spent the night in a hunting lodge, pacing the floor to keep warm. He was. located late Monday by trappers as he was walking in search of a town. A truck was sent from Dubois to bring Smith and his mail cargo here. Starts to Put Fuel in Her Furnace and Finds Explosive. If two telltale fuses had not been hanging from the piece of coal that Mrs. G. P. Shannon, 2245 N. Dearborn St., started to put into her furnace, there might not have been a house there today. Mrs. Shannon discovered the unexploded charge of miner’s powder in the coal in time, however, and today she exhibited it to her friends, remarking that she might have been “bloVn into the middle of next week.” The company which delivered the coal several days ago could not understand how the powder-loaded coal could have gotten past mine inspectors, the men who loaded the coal into cars, those who unloaded it here and the man who put it in the basement. The coal came from a Kentucky mine. SWINE RAISERS MEET Forty Delegates Attend Annual Convention at Scverin.
