PUZZLE: PARTY ALLEGIANCE OF NEW SENATOR New Mexico’s Republican Governor Names Man Long a Democrat. BY RUTH FINNEY /'.V 1 nitrd Prrntt WASHINGTON, Dec. 30.—Appointment of Bronson M. Cutting, of Santa Fe as United States Senator to succeed the late Andrieus A. Jones. Democrat, has brought about a situation unique in Senate history. Cutting has been appointed by a Republican Governor, but has never himself declared that he is a Republican. In New Mexico politics in cars past, he has been actively a Democrat. He was at one time a Roosevelt progressive. Yet for the past two years he has : upported the administration of the Republican who appointed him. Two Hold Power Balance In view of the close party division of the Senate it is an interesting coincidence that this new member is so Indefinite in party affiliation as to defy classification. Until Jones died there were fortyseven Democrats in the Senate, forty-six Republicans, and one Farmer-Laborej*, following rejection of Vare and Smith. Now, counting Cutting as a Republican, there are forty-seven Republicans, forty-six Democrats, and one Farmer-Laborer. Thus Republicans in theory gain control of the Senate when Cutting arrives after the holidays. It remains to be seen whether this is true in any respect except theory. And considering Cutting, it is probably more accurate to predict that the Senate will in the future be composed of forty-six Repub-

DIANA'
BEGIN HERE TODAY When Diana Farwell'a mother overhears talk of love between her (laughter and a schoolboy friend, she Is fearful that Diana will go wrong, like her sister. Vivian, who ran away from home four years before. So the mother hastens a marriage of Diana with Arthur Vance, some years older, a successful San Francisco lawyer. Diana is only 18 and goes Into marriage believing “Arthur is so different from other mew he always will be satisfied with merely spiritual love.” He respects her reserve, as a young girl's natural shyness, at first But, after months of loveless wedded life, he tells her she has wrecked his life because of her continued Insistence upon what he calls 'this unnatural relationship.” Some tim<* after her mother dies. Diana leaves Arthur and finds her long-lost sister. VJylan, preparing for a trip to New York. Diana -rents a room at the home of Mrs. Burton, widowed friend of Diana's mother, and enrolls In Seton's School of Acting. After a month she receives a letter from Arthur, begging her to return. She is desperately lonely, but writes him that she will never go back until she can be the kind of a wife he wants her to be. Within a few months she has progressed so well with her work that she is taken by Shepherd Seton. head of the school, as his personal pupil. In a few weeks he has aroused In her. In the impassioned love scenes they rehearse together, sensations she has never had before, Diana falls passionately in love with Seton and decides to aks Arthur for a divorce. Arthur flatly refused to divorce her. When sb* returns to the studio. Seton
licans and two men who hold a balance of power between the parties. Rich Young Bachelor This is an even safer prediction, considering the political situation in New Mexico. Cutting has to run for re-election next year, when Senator Jones’ term would have expired. It may be that by steering an independent course in the coming months in the Senate he can practically eliminate any serious opposition to his candidacy in either party next year. Cutting is a rich young bachelor, publisher of a Santa Fe newspaper. He and Senator Bratton are each 30 years old, and, thus, New Mexico becomes the only State in the Union represented solely by Senators under 40 years of age.

tells her his wife has gone east for six weeks. That night Beton did not call and when Diana phoned to tell him goodnight. he was obviously annoyed. Next day Seton's explanation that he feared his servants might be evesdropplng Infuriates Diana and she cannot go on with her lesson. Twenty-four hours later she has recovered her poise and Seton's friendliness makes her forget her humiliation over the phone call. Seton and Diana v.sit a roadhouse together. Diana decides to ask Arthur for a divorce. Diana comes Into Seton’s office to find him making love to his own wife. Diana and Seton call off their friendship. She ’eaves Seton to enter Klasalek's class when someone rushes in with the Information Seton has been shot. Vivian later confesses to Diana that she shot Seton. Her former husband comforts her and later she calls on Seton to find him nearly recovered. Vivian runs away leaving a note telling Diana they probably will never see each other again. Diana takes luncheon with Arthur and forgets thev had agreed to see an attorney about a divorce that afternoon. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER LVII "rvo you mean you want to go on JL/ as we are?” Arthur repeated. “Certainly not!” Diana flashed. “But I’m not in so much of a hurry as I was,” she finished slowly.
EXTEND OHIO TAG LIMIT Indiana Motorists Safe From Arrest Prior to Feb. 1. Indiana motorists who travel in Ohio without the new license plates will not be arrested in that State until Feb. 1, it \yas announced today by Fred Schortemeier, secretary of State, upon receipt of a letter from Chalmer Wilson, Ohio automobile commissioner. Wilson notified Schortemeier several days ago that Ohio authorities would arrest all motorists using last year’s plates after Jan. 1. But upon the Indiana secretary’s protest he has agreed to extend the period to Feb. 1.

Arthur smiled, a disagreeable sort of a smile—an expression on his fexe that was new to him, Diana thought. “Well, I’m not!” Diana repeated with some heat. “My heavens. Arthur, it was my idea—l suggested it—l guess I can do with it as I please.” “You appeared to be in a terrible hurry yesterday,” Arthur reminded her. “But I told you,” Diana cried exasperated. “See here, Arthur, I'm not going to see that lawyer today, but I AM going to see him soon. You needn't worry about that. But these other things have upset me terribly. I should think you would understand. “I think I can make a much greater success with ‘Mona Vanna’ if I temporarily forget our marital difficulties. Unless it makes some difference to you,” she added meaningly as she remembered the sweet smile he had bestowed a moment before on the mysterious lady at the table across the room. “It makes absolutely no difference to me,” Arthur replied coolly. Suddenly Arthur jabbed the cigaret he was smoking into the ash receiver and waited until the last wraith of smoke lifted from its crushed tip before speaking. “What are your plans for the future, Diana?” he asked, leaning across the table and staring intently at her. Until this moment she had felt no necessity for plans. Life, so far,

had Rad a habit of pulling her along irresistably—she had never felt quite capable of bridling it with too many plans of her own. But she lifted her head up with a little swagger and said confidently: “If 'Mona Vanna’ is successful. I hope to go to New York, san Francisco will have another light on Broadway,” she added gaily. Arthur's face fell. “So that’s the idea?” “Os course,” she replied simpiy, as if it had been her understanding from the beginning that only a fewshort months separated her life in San Francisco and a career in New York. “ ‘Mona Vanna’ will probably run for several weeks,” she said assuredly. “I see,” said Arthur. Why should it make any difference to Arthur? His present attitude assured her that even if he did not favor a legal separation, at least, he did not love her. She searched his face, secretly, for some hint that might explain the riddle for her. His kiss of the night before had been given on the impulse of the moment, she was sure of that. Out of sympathy, perhaps! Yes that was it, undoubtedly,

where had she read that “pity is akin to love?” Well, there would be none of that for her! Her lover (if such could possibly exist) must love her for herself and not for what the troubles of life had made her. But, whatever the reason for Arthur’s present concern, she was sure of one thing—it meaat nothing to her—nothing! (To B^Continued)
