PLAYING /AFIELD
With Billy Evans STRATEGY and comedy .figured in the two most unusual bits of base-running I ever gave a decision on.
The late Iferman Schaefer pulled the base-runnning that had strategy as its base. Eddie Ainsmith, the second catcher to handle Wa 1 ter Johnson’s varied a s s o r tment of stuff, played the role of comedian in the other unusual happening on the bases.
Schaefer pulled his stunt of stealing second and then sneaking back to first, after two balls had been pitched to the next batter, in a game at Washington, with Chicago as the opposing team. tt tt tt The situation arising late in the game had Milan, a fast runner, on third, and Schaefer, equally fleet Os foot, on first. At the time Washington needed a run to tie the score, BUT MILAN W AS OUT THE game was close, two out, the pitcher up and the manager couldn't afford to gamble with a pinch hitter at that stage. He trusted to hick and hoped the weakhitting pitcher might surprise him, Schaefer wasn’t as optimistic about the chances of the pitcher to break up the game as the Washington manager. After one strike had been ealled on the batsman he dashed for second on the next ball pitched, hoping to draw a throw that might enable Milan, perched on third, to dash for home. The Chicago catcher, realizing the chances were all against the pitcher making a hit, refused to fall for the strategy and didn’t throw. After two more balls had been pitched, Schaefer started plenty of confusion by dashing back to first base. No one know just how r the runner could be properly retired, and while the ball was being tossed hither and thither Schaefer made several more breaks for second. Milan finally dashed for the plate only to be retired at home on a close play. a u a Schaefer’s act in stealing a base ihe wrong way caused the rulemakers to specify particularly how it is possible to retire a runner when he starts to run the bases in reverse order. WHAT A TRAGEDY! A INSMITH’S comedy stuff happened in a game between Washington and Philadelphia. Going into the last half of the ninth, Philadelphia, with Chief Bender pitching, had the home boys beaten something like 12-3. With two down. Ainsmith hit safely. He stole second and third unmolested, as his run didn't mean a thing since Washington needed nine to tic. When Ainsmith reached third.

N. D. Beat by Wildcats in Tight Fray Northwestern Scores First Victory Over Irish in Ten Starts. i Itn Timm Sr.rrini EVANSTON, 111., Dec. 30.—A savage, battering attack launched in the last half by desperate Northwestern basketeers spelled defeat for a great Notre Dame quintet in Patten gymnasium here Thursday night, 25 to 23. The Wildcats savage assault on the Hoosier team, centered around one individual, a Hoosier, Russell Walters of Kokomo, who captured the high point honors of the evening with three field goals and two free throws. It was the Purple’s first victory over Notre Dame in ten conflicts on the hardwood court. The Irish, led by Frank Crowe, ran up a 17 to 14 advantage for the half, but' the Wildcats came back after the intermission battling savagely. Summary: N’WESTERN <2si. N. DAME <231. FCi FT TP! Asa matter of fact, Ainsmith had almost reached the bench before Bender finally delivered the ball. WAS COMIC SCENE Everything would have been all O. K. if the batsman had simply let the ball go by. Even had it been a strike the count would have only been two and two and Ainsmith would have registered on the pitch. But he elected to swing and fiied out to left field, retiring the side and ending the game. Most of the fans left the park under the impression the final score was 12-4, believing Ainsmith had stolen home when, as a matter j of fact, the run didn't count. lOWA VS. Martinsville did it last week, 60 to 23. They miss Tim Campbell over in Shelby town.” tt u u And we wouldn’t doubt a bit what the Kokomo Dispatch said recently. The statement we are referring to was: “Migosh, weren’t those Martinsville boys big and tough?
