MOW BETTER No. 3 Head—See Puzzle Bad Breakfasts Are Ruin of Sermons, Says Pastor. “Youths of today are becoming better in spite of newspaper publicity,” declared Miss Genevieve Harris, regional superintendent of young people, Wednesday at the closing meeting of the three-day mid-winter retreat of the Indiana Christian Ministerial Association at the Third Christian Church, Seventeenth St. and Broadway. “Bad breakfasts ruin sermons,” said Dr. Bruce L. Kershner, dean of Butler University school of religion, speaking on “How I Build My Sermon.” “College educations are not necessary for preparation for the ministry. It is not how many facts you cram into your head, but how many facts and ideas you take out of your head. “Books and people are the greatest sources for sermons with people more important. When we go into the souls cf people, we are meeting God,” he said. A. A. Honeywell, an Indianapolis architect, spoke on “The Religious Value of Architecture.” Dr. B. A. Abbott, St. Louis, closed the morning program. O. R. McColgin, Monticello. Ind., conducted the afternoon worship. Other speakers were M. C. McQuary, Anderson; Dr. A. W. Fortune, Lexington. MUSCLE SHOALS POWER GETS 0 X No. 3 Head—See Puzzle Legal Aid Rules U. S. Can Run Own Project. Uji l uitrd I'rrv* WASHINGTON, Dec. 29—Assistant Attorney General Parmenter reported to Attorney General Sargent today that an investigation by Justice Department attorneys shows the United States is within its rights in operating power projects at Muscle Shoals, Ala. The report was prepared for sub-* mission to Senator McNary, chairman of the Senate Agricultural Committee, following a claim by Alabama tha* it would operate the project. “This ’is not a case where the Government has entered upon business of generating power for commercial uses,” Parmenter said in the report. ‘t‘l is a case where the Government, under its constitutional powers, has entered upon the prosecution of a work of a national concern, relating to national defense and the improvement of navigation, in which a surplus product is created which can be disposed of in meeting the operating and maintenance costs of the plants and afford an opportunity for the recoupment of a portion of ts vast expenditure in constructing them. “That, the Government has a right to do this is beyond question.”
TELLS OF GAIN IN CO-OP AOS No. 3 Head—See Puzzle Thirty Associations Conducting Campaigns Now. Thirty or more national associations, representing as many industries now are conducting cooperative advertising and educational campaigns, appropriating from $50,000 to $1,500,000 annually for such purposes, and spending a large share of such funds in newsoaper advertising declared C. S. Clark of Chicago, field director of advertising and educational program of the National Confectioners’ Association, in an address to the Advertising Club of Indianapolis, at the Spink-Arms today. Clark, who spoke on “The Romance of Cooperative Advertising,” insisted that cooperation in all lines |of industry, especially in advertis- | ing, was one of the greatest boons | for modern-day business. | “Cooperative advertising to be | most effective should represent the . composite or sum total of the adI vertising brains of any given group |or industry. An industry usually | turns to cooperative advertising j when it is sick. Unjust attacks, predjudices, popular misunderstandj ings, the use of substitutes can only be answered by cooperative efforts on the part of the industries affected. “Cooperative advertising has increased the consumption of oranges, 80 per cent; lemons, 50 per cent; raisins over 300 per cent; cranberries, 77 per cent; greeting cards, 700 per cent; walnuts, 100 per cent, and j doubled the sale of knitted outerwear in four years,” he said. “To offset some of the certain detrimental propaganda against drinking coffee, a three-year campaign increased the annual consumption of coffee 400,000,000 pounds. The save-the-surface campaign has more than doubled the demand for paints and their slogan is triple the industry and the slogan “say it with flowers” has doubled the sale of flowers in the past four years and this slogan is worth more than a million dollars a word to the florists of the country.” OHIO WARMS MOTORISTS 1928 License Tags Must Be Carried on Cars After Jan. 1. In response to a letter received from Calmer Wilson, Ohio commissioner of motor vehicles, stating that all Indiana motorists driving into Ohio after Jan. 1, without 1928 license plates would be liable to arrest. Fred Schortemeier, secretary of State, wrote him asking that the time be extended to Feb. 1, when the license sales close in this State. “I want to advise every motorist that if he contemplates driving into Ohio after next week, to immediately obtain the new plates,” Schortemeier said.
